Are you interested in monitoring the recreational steelhead fishery in streams along the Monterey and San Luis Obispo counties' coasts? This recreation fisheries work is part of the statewide Steelhead Report and Restoration Card (SRRC) program that was established to inform the California Department of Fish and Wildlife scientists regarding fisheries management and regulatory decisions.

This position has the primary responsibility of assisting the Environmental Scientist in conducting recreational steelhead angling assessments (e.g. creel surveys and using angler survey boxes) in coastal streams within Monterey and San Luis Obispo counties. In addition to data collection, this position assists an Environmental Scientist in data entry, data analysis, and report writing, and updating monitoring protocols as needed.

Working Conditions
Ability to work outside along streams at odd or irregular hours, primarily focused on legal fishing days (Saturdays, Sundays, Wednesdays, and legal holidays between December 01 and March 07); ability to interact with members of the public during angler surveys and to acquire landowner access; ability to conduct biological resource work in the field; travel throughout the state. Ability to use a personal computer and keyboard at least several hours per day using Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.), sitting for hours at a time, which may involve walking or standing for brief periods to access files, references, and other program materials. Ability to attend meetings and internal and external trainings. Ability to work with CDFW Regional Staff via e-mail, telephone and through virtual meetings. Possession of valid CA driver's license. Ability to drive for up to 8 hours. Ability to work outdoors during variable weather conditions, operate 4WD vehicles, wade in swift streams, and hike long distances over uneven outdoor terrain carrying a 25 lb. backpack for up to 6 hours.
