Are you interested in beginning your career as a wildlife management professional? The California Department of Fish and Wildlife is now hiring Scientific Aid positions to assist in the operation and management of the 9,600-acre Upper Butte Basin Wildlife Area. With this exciting opportunity incumbents will work at a hunter check station during waterfowl season (October - February), where you will be processing hunters on and off the the 3 units that make up the wildlife area. This includes preparing check stations for hunting season, posting signs, checking hunting license, collecting daily fees, recording hunter numbers, and collecting harvest data. This position will also assist in conducting wildlife surveys and banding operations to fulfill research requirements on the wildlife area. Performing this job will improve your bird identification skills by learning the various waterfowl species harvested by the hunting public. During the non-hunting season, you will be trained to perform the service and routine maintenance of equipment used on the wildlife area, and then use that equipment for planting and fertilizing fields, mowing roads, or disking fields. Alongside permanent personnel, you will gain skills and abilities replacing water control structures, building maintenance, and repairing wildlife area structures as needed. You will be asked to perform general maintenance throughout the wildlife area, the office, and check stations, including trash pickup. Under the close supervision of the Senior Environmental Scientist Supervisor, the incumbent will assist in conducting wildlife surveys and the day-to-day operations and habitat projects, equipment maintenance, facilities management, and maintenance and development activities on Upper Butte Basin Wildlife Area. This position will require weekend, holiday, and non-traditional work hours.

The Fish and Wildlife Scientific Aid classification is a non-testing classification.

Working Conditions
This position is based in Butte and Glenn counties working on Llano Seco, Howard Slough and Little Dry Creek Units of the Upper Butte Basin Wildlife Area. The position varies between sedentary office setting and outdoor work environments. The incumbent will be expected to work in inclement weather (hot, wet and cold), and rough terrain. The incumbent will be required to work weekends, holidays, and/or odd hours. This position requires possession of a valid Driver's License. This position requires the incumbent to wear a uniform identifying the employee as CDFW staff on certain occasions. Occasional travel may be required within the state of California via private or public transportation (i.e., automobile, airplane, etc.). Travel may include an overnight stay. Must be able to deploy with short notice for extended periods (up to 7 days) that may include overnight stay.
