A Brief Overview

A Fitness Specialist provides health and fitness service, ensures a safe and clean environment while initiating fitness assessments, exercise and equipment orientations, and promoting fitness center programs and services.
What You Will Do
  • Conducts primary fitness assessments and equipment orientations.
  • Acts as Manager on Duty when the management team is not present.
  • Sanitizes the equipment and ensures it is safe and in working order. Ensures supplies on the fitness floor are properly stocked.
  • Moves quickly and acts as the primary responder once on scene in all emergency codes - if 1st responder: must perform CPR, use AED, or apply first aid as needed; if 2nd responder: must help as needed, crowd control, and handle documentation.
  • Develops incentive programs and presentations to keep members engaged and educated.
  • Delivers health screenings and special events on and off site as needed.

  • Must abide by all requirements to safely and securely maintain Protected Health Information (PHI) for our patients. Annual training, the UH Code of Conduct and UH policies and procedures are in place to address appropriate use of PHI in the workplace.


Qualifications:
Education
  • Bachelor's Degree in health, exercise science, physical education, or related field from accredited college/university. (Required)
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Customer service. (Required proficiency)
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills. (Required proficiency)
  • Demonstrates capability to instruct using appropriate biomechanics and use of biofeedback. (Required proficiency)
  • Ability to recognize different levels of injury and to respond with first aid only. (Required proficiency)
  • Demonstrates the ability to effectively educate on lifestyle modification while respecting diversity (Required proficiency)
  • Fitness Equipment knowledge - cardiovascular, strength/resistance. (Required proficiency)
  • Skill in measuring heart rate, blood pressure and obtaining rating of perceived exertion (RPE) (Required proficiency)
  • Skill in conducting fitness assessments for cardiovascular, muscular strength/endurance, flexibility and body composition and conducting follow up education. (Required proficiency)
  • Skill in development of written exercise prescriptions and teaching and demonstrate specific exercises (Required proficiency)
  • Ability to spot exercisers and correct form (Required proficiency)
  • Ability to adapt exercise programs based on chronic disease or other limitations (Required proficiency)
  • Skill in using telephone and computer to communicate and document. (Required proficiency)
Licenses and Certifications
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Heartsaver First Aid/CPR/AED within 90 Days (Required)
  • National fitness certification through accredited provider (i.e. ACSM, NSCA, NASM, ACE, AFAA, NETA, RYT) (Preferred)
