This is skilled mechanical work as either a Technician I (light duty) or Technician II (heavy duty). Primary responsibilities include the maintenance and repair of diesel or gas operated vehicles and equipment. Work is performed independently or with team members. Supervision, productivity, and performance evaluations are received from a Lead Mechanic, Supervisor or Manager.

Fleet Technician I Starting Salary (Depending on qualifications):

Level 1 - Entry (Auto) = $22.26/hr

Level 2 - Master ASE (Auto) = $25.59/hr

Level 3 - Master ASE (Auto) & 1 EVT (Law Enforcement) = $27.83/hr

Fleet Technician II Starting Salary (Depending on qualifications):

Level 1 - Entry No certification's required = $24.54/hr

Level 2 - Master ASE (Truck) & 2 EVT's (at least 1 Fire Apparatus) = $28.22/hr

Level 3 - Master ASE (Truck) & Master EVT (Fire Apparatus) = $30.68/hr

Technical
  • Proficiently diagnose vehicles with electronic test equipment (scanner, laptop, etc) and perform necessary repairs, including component removal and replacement
  • Diagnose and make repairs on vehicles and equipment, including but not limited to engine, transmission, brakes, and suspension systems
  • Read and comprehend written and electric repair and wiring schematics
  • Diagnose and repair standard vehicle and equipment wiring, components, and lighting, including component removal and replacement
  • Diagnose and repair complex emergency vehicle wiring, components and lighting, including component removal and replacement
  • Diagnose and repair automotive and various size trailer brakes, including component removal and replacement
  • Respond to road calls and work in the field, on occasion, as required
  • Update knowledge by reading and participating in educational opportunities
  • Order parts and replace inventory following City policy and protocols as needed

EMERGENCY RESPONSE STATUS: As a condition of employment, City of Largo employees will be required to work as directed during an undeclared and/or a declared emergency. All employees are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the normal work location, and may include duties other than those specified in the official job description.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Fleet Technician I:

Education and Experience:
  • High school graduation or General Education Diploma (GED) and completion of an approved course in heavy and diesel mechanics or automotive mechanic and two (2) years experience as a heavy equipment or automotive mechanic; or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • The number of ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) and EVT (Emergency Vehicle Technician) certifications will determine the level within the position; sustaining any/all certifications is the responsibility of the employee
  • Fleet Technician I:
  • Level 1 - Entry (Auto)
  • Level 2 - Master ASE (Auto)
  • Level 3 - Master ASE (Auto) & 1 EVT (Law Enforcement)
  • Valid Driver's License
Fleet Technician II:

Education and Experience:
  • High school graduation or General Education Diploma (GED) and completion of an approved course in heavy and diesel mechanics or five (5) years experience as a heavy equipment or automotive mechanic; or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Valid CDL Class 'B' driver's license or the ability to obtain within six months after employment is required
  • The number of ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) and EVT (Emergency Vehicle Technician) certifications will determine level within the position; testing expenses for required certifications provided by the City; maintaining any/all certifications is the responsibility of the employee
  • Level 1 - Entry No certification's required
  • Level 2 - Master ASE (Truck) & 2 EVT's (at least 1 Fire Apparatus)
  • Level 3 - Master ASE (Truck) & Master EVT (Fire Apparatus)
  • Valid Driver's License
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and standard practices of the automotive and heavy equipment mechanic trade
  • Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and standard safety precautions of the work
  • Considerable knowledge of external and internal engine components, transmission function, brake systems, suspension systems, electrical systems, complex emergency lighting, and fabrication skills
  • Fleet includes but is not limited to:
  • Heavy equipment: Sweepers, Trailers, Off Road Tractors, Construction Equipment, Solid Waste Vehicles, Dump Trucks and Bucket Trucks, Large Trailers
  • Light equipment: Automobiles, ½ ton, ¾ ton, and 1 ton vehicles and small trailers
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work Environment: 20% inside a climate controlled building; 80% outside which may include driving.

Physical Requirements: The essential functions of the job require: sitting approximately one (1) hour per day, standing approximately six (6) hours per day, and walking approximately one (1) hour per day. The work requires frequent: bending/stooping, climbing, crawling, fine manipulations, grasping, kneeling, pulling, pushing, working overhead, reaching, stretching and repetitive motion, lifting/carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds, occasional lifting/carrying objects weighing over 50 pounds (such as truck tires and brake drums).

Sensory Requirements: Hearing: Enough to understand what others are saying in normal conversation in person, on the telephone, and detect abnormal noises in engines, drive lines, and other mechanical systems. Speaking: Enough to communicate orally with others in person, on the telephone, and while giving formal presentations to groups. Seeing: Enough to see and read computer monitor screens, operate a vehicle, and read fine print.

Driving Requirements: The work requires driving and possession of a valid Florida Driver's License License.

Technology: The work requires ability to operate telephones, smart phones, tablets, photocopiers, printers, desktop and/or laptop computers, calculators and all associated software.

Other Machines: The work requires the ability to operate various other machines including but not limited to automotive, off road, forklifts, and heavy equipment.

Tools: The work requires proficiency with various mechanic tools and shop equipment.
