Department

Administratively housed within the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy, the Department includes 10 faculty and 90 graduate students and offers a PAB-accredited professional master's degree, a Ph.D., and an undergraduate minor. The Department offers joint graduate pathways in Planning/Demography, Planning/International Affairs,

Planning/Geographic Information Science, Planning/Law, Planning/Public Administration, and Planning/Public Health. The PhD program has research emphases in planning for an aging population; healthy and resilient communities; sustainable communities; transportation, land use, and accessibility; collaborative and participatory governance; community neighborhood change; and human settlements and institutions in the context of global change. College and university partners include the Center for Disaster Risk Policy, the Pepper Institute for Aging and Public Policy, and the Center for Demography and Population Health.

Responsibilities

The Department of Urban and Regional Planning at Florida State University seeks candidates for two tenure line faculty positions at the rank of assistant or associate professor to begin in August 2025. The successful candidates for either position must also demonstrate that they will contribute to our commitment to multi-culturalism, equity, and cultural competency.

The successful candidate for this position is required to have a transportation planning focus. Specific research and teaching areas that would complement our existing faculty expertise include, but are not limited to, travel demand modeling (including activity-based simulation modeling), transportation equity, and active transportation.

The successful candidate will teach at least two existing graduate courses in our transportation specialization: Transportation Planning Process, Methods of Transportation Planning, Pedestrian-Oriented Communities, Transportation and Land Use, and International Transportation. Further, they will design at least one new transportation course based on their expertise that complements and advances our transportation curriculum. They may also teach courses in our graduate core curriculum or our undergraduate minor.

Qualifications

Rank will be determined based on qualifications. Applicants must hold (or be expected to receive prior to August 2025) a doctorate in urban and regional planning, or an equivalent degree in a related field, and must demonstrate potential for excellence in teaching and research.

Normally will have produced creative work, professional writing, or research in refereed and other professional journals. Must meet university criteria for appointment to the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.
