Job Duties

The Department of Forensic Science (DFS) seeks a highly skilled, detail oriented Forensic Administrative Specialist III to work in the Forensic Training Section. This position will prioritize and manage work while providing administrative support to section staff, course students and the Forensic Science Academy (FSA). This position will prepare and assemble training materials, reports, and other documents, respond to inquiries concerning the training program, place orders for equipment / supplies following State purchasing guidelines and maintain the activities calendar for the Forensic Training Section staff. In addition, this position will assist with special projects for the Director's Office and the Division of Technical Services, and manage the department's web-based registration system for training courses. The ideal candidate will be professional, well organized, able to set priorities, take initiative, multi-task, maintain a positive attitude, have a high level of integrity, and work efficiently under minimal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Experience establishing and maintaining files and records in compliance with policies and procedures
  • Demonstrated experience preparing, compiling, and managing the flow of correspondence, documents, projects, and reports in an accurate and professional manner
  • Experience providing administrative support to include delivering a full range of administrative services:
    • Responding to and directing business related telephone calls to the appropriate person
    • Placing orders and maintaining inventory of supplies
    • Distributing and processing mail and routing official documents
    • Preparing, formatting, typing, proofreading, and processing of documents using knowledge of grammar, punctuation, and spelling
    • Greeting visitors
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365, to include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Experience providing excellent customer service while maintaining effective and professional working relationships with a variety of people
  • Demonstrated experience prioritizing and completing work accurately, timely, and with minimal supervision
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing with internal and external customers
Additional Considerations
  • Experience with, or knowledge of, a web-based registration system
  • Knowledge of procurement procedures, rules and regulations of the Commonwealth of Virginia
  • Experience providing administrative support in a Forensic Science Laboratory and/or training section

Background Investigation: Selected candidate(s) must successfully pass a background investigation to include a fingerprint-based criminal history check.
