Pay Range

$172,140 - $265,188 Annually

$172,140 - $221,064 Annually for the SEL.3 level

$206,490 - $265,188 Annually for the SEL.4 level

Job Description

We have an opening for a Group Leader of the Generative Protein Design Group, which is part of the Data Analytics and Decision Sciences Section. The primary focus of this group is the research and development of next-generation, machine learning-driven computational pipeline for optimizing protein-protein interactions as part of the Center for Predictive Bioresilience (CPB). CPB is an exciting and fast-paced engineering center combining predictive computational modeling, machine learning, and experimental biology to develop medical countermeasures. You will provide technical, programmatic, and administrative leadership for a multi-disciplinary team with computational expertise in machine learning (ML), molecular simulation, optimization, and protein structure bioinformatics. You will also maintain a programmatic assignment and will report to the Engineering Data Analytics and Decision Sciences Section Leader. This position is in the Computational Engineering Division (CED), within the Engineering Directorate.

This position will be filled at eitherlevel based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

You will
  • Supervise and provide technical and administrative direction/guidance, career counseling, mentoring, coaching, and support to 10+ group members.
  • Develop and serve the group's customer base by maintaining a close interface with programmatic and project elements.
  • Formulate a long-term plan for research and development that will provide state-of-the-art capabilities to further the mission of LLNL.
  • Collaborate with project leaders within Laboratory programs to anticipate and meet technical needs.
  • Develop research and development initiatives for external sponsorship and for internally-supported LDRD and Tech Base projects.
  • Recruit and hire new staff as needed to meet Section, Division, and programmatic staffing needs.
  • Ensure quality of work and promote effective teamwork within the group.
  • Attend Section and Division meetings, plan and conduct monthly Group meetings, and conduct institutional training sessions as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the SEL.4 level
  • Set project vision and strategy and influence technical direction for self and others.
  • Develop new Engineering capabilities and novel technologies in machine learning; using creativity and innovation to solve highly complex problems, and developing and modifying approaches as needed.
  • Provide subject matter expert capability in one or more areas of machine learning.

Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Machine Learning, Computational Biology, Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Expertise in one or more of the following: deep learning, unsupervised feature learning, zero- or few-shot learning, active learning, transformer-based language modeling, multimodal learning, ensemble methods, scalable online estimation, and probabilistic graphical models.
  • Leadership skills and experience supervising others in a technical environment.
  • Ability to lead, motivate, and build highly complex interdisciplinary teams to work towards programmatic and institutional goals.
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills, specifically the ability to explain and present highly complex ideas, as well as to advise employees and all levels of management.

Additional qualifications at the SEL.4 level
  • Subject matter expertise in one or more relevant technical areas including: deep learning, unsupervised feature learning, zero- or few-shot learning, active learning, transformer-based language modeling, multimodal learning, ensemble methods, scalable online estimation, and probabilistic graphical models.
  • Significant experience in the leadership of technical projects, project planning, and execution.
  • Significant experience developing and implementing creative solutions to highly complex problems.
  • Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to lead a team, advise senior management, and to positively represent the Program and the Laboratory.

Qualifications We Desire
  • PhD in Machine Learning, Computational Biology, Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics or a related field.
  • Experience with work planning and execution of work for government sponsor organizations including DOE and DHS.
  • Experience in the hiring and career development of employees.
  • Experience with performance reviews, ranking, and salary management processes.

Special Requirements

Anticipated Clearance Level: Either no clearance, DOE L or Q clearance depending on assignment.

Security Clearance

This position requires either no security clearance, or a Department of Energy (DOE) L-level or Q-level clearance depending on theparticular assignment.

If you are selected and a security clearance is required, wewillinitiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Also, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. L and Q-level clearances require U.S. citizenship.
