Overview:

We are seeking a Group Leader for the Corrosion Science & Technology Group who will focus on managing the group as well as conduct fundamental and applied materials research on environmental degradation through application of fundamental mechanistic understanding, advanced characterization techniques, modeling and simulation and laboratory validation in extreme environments. This position resides in the Materials in Extremes Section, in the Materials Science and Technology Division, Physical Sciences Directorate, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

As a group leader, you will manage and mentor group members including research staff, technical staff, post-doctoral fellows, and students. You will be responsible for promoting and maintaining a culture with high ideals for safety, security and ethics. As a science leader, you will lead multi-disciplinary and multi-organizational teams to develop world-leading research programs, execute world-leading research projects and communicate project results to the international research community. As a researcher, you will employ state-of-the-art technology and research techniques to develop solutions for sponsors including energy efficiency, renewable energy, transportation, conservation, fossil energy, fusion energy, nuclear power and space exploration.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
  • As a Group leader, you will be responsible for managing and mentoring the group (~10%) but also developing and leading a relevant research portfolio (~90%)
  • Participate/ lead in the initiation of new research directions and development of research proposals to contend for internal and external funding
  • Coordinate and/or conduct research
  • Maintain effective communications concerning scientific efforts internal and external to the laboratory, including publication of results in peer-reviewed journals and presentation of results at scientific meetings
  • Develop a vision and implement a cohesive group research strategy to ensure the success of new and ongoing research projects to position the group for future success
  • Attract a high quality, diverse pool of candidates and hire staff members who are committed to world-class R&D and aspire to be the best in their field
  • Assist staff in setting performance goals consistent with the group's strategy and members' long-term career goals. Provide feedback to address performance issues in a timely manner
  • Advance the reputation of the group and its members through establishing collaborations, Professional Society leadership and involvement, and organization of technical events
  • Travel will be required to brief sponsors, conduct field exercises, and attendance of scientific conferences
  • Lead collaboration with other scientists and technical personnel in a fast-paced, flexible work environment
  • Present and report research results and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
  • Exceed expectations for the safe conduct of research and lead by example by exercising the principles in ORNL's "Research Code of Conduct" as a guide for proposing, performing, and communicating research . Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements

Basic Qualifications:
  • A PhD in Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics or a related discipline
  • A minimum of 6 years of experience in corrosion research


Preferred Qualifications:
  • An outstanding record of productive and creative research as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Proven experience leading R&D and/or technical teams
  • Demonstrated success in proposing research
  • Experience writing successful proposals to government sponsors
  • Demonstrated extensive knowledge of aqueous and high temperature corrosion principles and materials science
  • Demonstrated extensive knowledge on laboratory simulations of extreme environments
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate in English to an international scientific audience
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks on time and adapt to evolving needs
