Patton State Hospital, Human Resources is accepting applications for at least one (1) permanent, full-time appointment to the Health Record Technician I classification in the Health Information Management Department (HIMD). A Training and Development opportunity may also be considered. This position is under the direction of the Health Record Technician II Supervisor and general supervision of the Health Record Technician III Supervisor and HIMD Director.
The HRT I abstracts and codes health records utilizing medical terminology, International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10), Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) coding systems for processing Fee-For-Service and ancillary forms in compliance with regulatory agency requirements; performs health record maintenance, including filing, thinning, splitting, and destroying records; enters discharge, court visit, and acute leave patient data into excel spreadsheet from daily hospital census; and audits, logs and tracks court visit and discharge summaries for compliance of timeliness.
The HRT I is expected to maintain confidentiality, privacy, and security of Protected Health Information (PHI) and Personally Identifiable Information (PII); maintain professionalism and work positively with all levels of management, supervisors, and staff; promote effective teamwork; utilize a high degree of initiative, judgment, and responsibility; maintain a professional appearance; comply with hospital policies and procedures; and report to work on time.
Highly desirable qualifications include:
One-year experience working in a large healthcare or correctional facility in the HIM department, performing duties related to health record maintenance and abstracting/coding; experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Adobe; and possession and maintenance of an accreditation through American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) as a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) (beneficial but not required).
The HRT I must possess the following:
KNOWLEDGE : Basic medical terminology, human terminology and human anatomy; health record systems and methodology used by health facilities, classification of morbidity and mortality information for statistical purposes.
ABILITY TO : Understand and conform to specific basic principles and rules of health data abstracting and coding; meet and deal tactfully with the public, communicate effectively; and benefit from academic and in-service training and job experience.

Training and Development Information
T&D assignments are temporary assignments of up to 24 months for training purposes. DSH encourages the use of T&D assignments to provide employees the opportunity to obtain any or a combination of the following:

An employee must have permanent status in the present classification. An employee currently in a Limited Term position is not eligible for a T&D assignment.
