District Five is one of six districts of the New Mexico Department of Transportation. The boundaries of District Five include the following counties: Torrance, Santa Fe, Los Alamos, Rio Arriba, Taos, and San Juan. Employees in the District are responsible for providing the Maintenance, Construction, Engineering Support, and Business support measures of the Department to ensure the safety of the public as well as efficient highways.

Why does the job exist?
This position operates medium to heavy-duty equipment in a safe and efficient manner to maintain highways and roadways for the safety of the traveling public. Position will be responsible for snow removal operations.
How does it get done?
Incumbent will operate a single axle dump trucks, large or small front end loaders, some pull type tractors, self-propelled brooms and rollers. Incumbent will perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance duties required in the patrol. Incumbent will use of various hand tools. Incumbent will have knowledge and experience in snow removal and emergency operations (call outs) and be required to remove trash and dead animals from right of way.

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have experience in the following:
-Roadway maintenance activities,
-Basic traffic control experience,
-Operating medium to heavy-duty equipment,
-Using various hand tools,
-Customer service
Minimum Qualification
High School diploma or equivalent and one (1) year of experience maintaining roads and operating medium to heavy-duty equipment to include loaders, five- and ten-yard dump trucks, self-propelled broom, rollers, or mowers. Must possess a valid drivers license and a valid Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL), (or equivalent licenses from another state) upon hire. This position may require Herbicide, Tanker and/or Hazmat endorsement.

Employment Requirements
This position is designated a safety sensitive position within the meaning of the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991 and must abide by all provisions of the Federal Omnibus Transportation Testing Act. Employment is subject to pre-employment and random drug testing, in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing. Employment requires successful completion of a pre-offer physical and pre-employment drug test; employment is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License and must have or obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL), (or equivalent licenses from another state) within one (1) year of hire. Tanker Endorsement may be required. Business/personal reference check and Driver's License verification are also required, and employment is conditional pending results. Must successfully pass demonstrated abilities test with a 75% or better.
Working Conditions
Work is performed primarily in the field in varying weather conditions - hot or cold, humidity, wind, rain and snow, exposure to sunlight, dust, pollen, chemicals, exposure to moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles, rough/rugged terrain, noxious plants and infected trash, exposure to hazardous chemicals, insects and reptiles, loud noises, confined spaces, stressful situations, subject to falls and bruises, considerable physical strain, high speed/ high volume traffic, interaction with the public, local county, school and city officials by phone an in person, irregular hours day or night, subject to call out for emergencies, heavy lifting, sitting/standing, bending, squatting, climbing, reaching, kneeling and crawling for extended periods of time may be required. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Includes night time work and snow removal as applicable are required.
