The Developmental Disabilities Council (DDC) promotes advocacy, capacity building, and systemic change to improve the quality of life for individuals with disabilities. The NM Office of Guardianship (OOG) provides legal services and professional guardianship services to income-eligible New Mexicans with disabilities who need assistance making decisions about their lives. OOG also oversees and monitors services provided to the individuals it serves and promotes and provides information on available alternatives to guardianship.

Why does the job exist?

The purpose of the position is to provide monitoring and case management services to Protected People under guardianship, and those exercising alternatives to guardianship. This position provides support and outreach to over 1,000 Protected People served by OOG's contracted professional guardians, and their families; and to all New Mexicans receiving services through the Office of Guardianship.

This position will assist in improving outcomes in the lives of Protected People by periodically visiting with Protected People to ensure the delivery of quality services. This position will work with the Protected Person, the guardian, and other service providers to ensure the Protected Person receives all the assistance and services to which they are entitled.

In addition to supporting Protected People under guardianship, this position will work with New Mexicans using alternatives to guardianship to make decisions about their lives. This support will consist of education, technical assistance, and case management.

This position will mentor, supervise, and train interns pursuing a degree in social work and interested in working with people with disabilities.

Finally, this position will assist with public outreach, public education, support, and education regarding guardianship and the rights of Protected People.

How does it get done?

This position's key responsibilities will be case management, monitoring guardianship services, mentoring social worker interns, developing and implementing projects, assessing applications for OOG services, composing detailed reports, and community outreach.

Who are the customers?

The Protected People under guardianship; professional and family guardians; individuals pursuing alternatives to guardianship; and New Mexicans with disabilities, their family members, and communities.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have a Master of Social Work degree; at least five years¿ experience working with people with disabilities, including working with guardians for individuals with disabilities; be fluent in Spanish; be a National Certified Guardian by the Center for Guardianship Certification.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's degree in Human Services, Social Sciences, Social Work or Counseling and two (2) years of experience in mental health and/or substance abuse counseling. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within two (2) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions

Work will be performed primarily in an office setting, with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage, and extended periods of sitting. Must be able to work effectively with diverse client population including individuals with physical, cognitive, and psychiatric disabilities and limitations. In-state travel, including occasional overnight travel. Must be able to lift 25 lbs.
