District Five is one of six districts of the New Mexico Department of Transportation. The boundaries of District Five include the following counties: Torrance, Santa Fe, Los Alamos, Rio Arriba, Taos, and San Juan. Employees in the District are responsible for providing the Maintenance, Construction, Engineering Support, and Business support measures of the Department to ensure the safety of the public as well as efficient highways.

This position is in Santa Fe within the District Wide Crews will be required to travel throughout the District Five area.

Why does the job exist?

This position will operate heavy-duty equipment used to maintain, build and upgrade highways, inspect roadways to evaluate effectiveness of the maintenance management system. Implement measures for highway maintenance and repair using approved maintenance and construction methods to provide technical consultations regarding to road surfaces, shoulders, structures, signs, drainage structures, and road debris removal at a Patrol and or District wide. This position will be required to be on various crews within the District wide crews including but not limited to Chipseal, Graffiti, Trucking, and specialized projects based on management needs.

How does it get done?

Incumbent operates a grader/blade, 5 and 10-yard dump truck with or without attachments, loaders, tractor-trailer combination, roller, bulldozer, self-propelled broom, tractor-mower combination, backhoe, oil-distributor, water truck, snowplow, salt spreader, crane, lay down machine, chip spreader, and end-dump trailers. This position will respond to callouts and emergencies as well as snow removal operations and respond to inquiries from the general public. This position is also for entering data into a computer-based system to report daily work activities, into the Maintenance Management System.

Minimum Qualification

High School diploma or equivalent and one (1) year of experience maintaining roads and operating medium to heavy-duty equipment to include loaders, five- and ten-yard dump trucks, self-propelled broom, rollers, or mowers. Must possess a valid drivers license and a valid Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL), (or equivalent licenses from another state) upon hire. This position may require Herbicide, Tanker and/or Hazmat endorsement.

Employment Requirements

This position is designated a safety sensitive position within the meaning of the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991 and must abide by all provisions of the Federal Omnibus Transportation Testing Act. Employment is subject to pre-employment and random testing, in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing. Employment requires successful completion of a pre-employment physical and pre-employment drug test; employment is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License and a Class A Commercial Driver's License at the time of hire. Tanker endorsement may be required. Business and/or personal reference checks and driver's license verification are also required, and employment is conditional pending results. Must successfully pass demonstrated abilities test with a 75% or better.

Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily in the field in varying weather conditions - hot or cold, humidity, wind, rain and snow; exposure to sunlight, dust, pollen, chemicals, rough/rugged terrain, insects and reptiles, noxious plants and infected trash; exposure to moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals and/or asphalt and petroleum products; exposure to temperatures up to 150 degrees around oil distributor operations; high speed/high volume traffic and loud noises; subject to falls and bruises, considerable physical strain; standing for extended periods of time doing traffic control or walking long distances for litter control; hand dexterity required for some duties; numerous specific vision abilities to include: close, distance, color and peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus; some climbing, reaching, kneeling and crawling to perform job duties; ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Work may also be performed in an office setting with exposure to visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage to include working with faxes, copiers and printers. May be required to work irregular hours and is subject to call out for weather, accidents and/or emergencies on short notice; willingness to accept change of geographical assignments; interaction with the public.
