The substitute teacher is in charge of the classroom in the absence of the regular teacher and is responsible for the delivery of the instructional program as well as maintaining the care, welfare, safety, and security of students.

Substitute placement is on an on-call, as needed basis as dictated by the daily needs of our district. Be advised, there is no guarantee of placement on any given day and no ongoing expectation of placement.

Pay and Benefits:
  • $200 per full day
  • $100 per half day
  • Earn one hour of sick leave for every 40 hours worked
  • Substitutes who work in excess of 630 hours per school year are eligible for medical benefits. The substitute is required to pay a monthly premium for these benefits.

Required Qualifications and Supplemental Information:
  • Valid WA State Teaching Certificate (may be a regular teaching certificate or a substitute certificate)

  • Position not eligible for benefits other than paid sick leave and medical benefits as outlined above.

Examples of Duties:
  • Implement the teacher's written lesson plans. Consult with site administration to resolve questions and/or concerns.
  • Teach scheduled classes.
  • Prepare a written summary of the work completed.
  • Make teacher and/or principal aware of special situations or problems encountered.
  • Maintain proper control and discipline both inside and outside the classroom, including hallways, in a positive manner by establishing good, wholesome rapport through healthy, human relationships between individuals involved in the learning processes and in accordance with district policy and procedure.
  • Maintain high standards and uphold expectations for students and staff.
  • Properly report misconduct to the principal.
  • Maintain supervisory control of students including but not limited to before and after school as well as classroom transitions.
  • Perform basic attendance functions as required.
  • Comply with all building procedures and schedules. Promote the proper use and care of school property.
  • Uphold Board policies and follow administrative procedures.
  • Cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  • Work cooperatively with site administration, staff, students, and families.
  • Follow directives of site administration including but not limited to substituting in another classroom during a preparation period, performing administrative tasks, and performing other related duties as assigned.
  • Substitutes accepting long term placements may be responsible for performing additional duties and responsibilities as noted by the principal.
  • Maintain professional/business casual dress, appropriate to the substitute placement.

You will receive payment for day(s) worked from the Hood Canal School District. The pay period is from the 1st of the month through the 31st of the month, payable on the last working day of the following month. (i.e. Days worked in January will be paid to you on the last working day of February.)
