Position Summary:

The Department of Human & Molecular Genetics at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Medicine is seeking a motivated individual to join Dr. Gogna's lab as a Hourly Lab Technician. The Gogna laboratory studies new therapeutic interventions for adult and pediatric solid tumor cancers with the primary goal of translating these findings into clinical trials. This position provides research duties essential to the success of the Faculty, Postdocs and students in the Gogna lab. This role involves supporting research activities in bioinformatics and machine learning, particularly related to exon sequencing and spatial genomics. You will work alongside experienced researchers and contribute to various aspects of our projects.

Job Duties:
  • Assist with bioinformatics analyses, including data processing and interpretation
  • Support machine learning model development and implementation
  • Participate in exon sequencing and spatial genomics research
  • Perform routine lab tasks such as maintaining records, preparing samples, and ensuring lab cleanliness
  • Contribute to data management and documentation efforts
  • Collaborate with team members to ensure the smooth operation of lab activities
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (life sciences, bioinformatics, computer science, or a related discipline)
  • Basic knowledge of bioinformatics and machine learning principles
  • Familiarity with molecular biology techniques such as PCR and gel electrophoresis is a plus
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Must have a demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion in past experiences or a commitment to do so as a hourly employee at VCU
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with programming languages (e.g., Python, R) and bioinformatics tools
  • Prior lab experience, especially in a research setting, is beneficial but not required
