Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL) Advanced Light Source (ALS) Division has an opening for an IT Support Specialist (Systems Administrator) to provide technical support to scientific and administrative customers.

In this role, you will be the first point of contact for end-user Information Technology issues within the ALS. You will provide IT support for the ALS staff and user community, including assistance with computer systems, hardware, and software. Interaction with customers will be through phone, email, in person, online chat, or via remote access. Working closely with other ALS-IT Systems Administrators, you will help oversee the efficient operation of the ALS network and computing infrastructure. This includes the procurement, configuration, setup, maintenance, and troubleshooting of desktop, laptop, and server computer systems, printers, networking equipment, and other hardware. Additionally, you will provide basic to intermediate troubleshooting for various desktop operating systems and software products. You may also lead individual and small group training for end-users regarding the use of computer systems and software, and produce training materials and FAQ documentation as necessary. To succeed in this position, you must be a good problem solver, an excellent communicator, and willing to learn new technologies.

The Advanced Light Source is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national scientific user facility whose excellent scientific reputation, expert staff, and capabilities in the soft X-ray, hard X-ray, and infrared regimes attract over 1,500 academic and industrial users each year in disciplines spanning physical, chemical, materials, biological, energy, and Earth sciences. It is one of five Berkeley Lab user facilities that serve a combined 11,000 users annually. The co-location of these user facilities - including the Molecular Foundry Nanoscale Science Research Center and the NERSC scientific computing center, as well as Berkeley Lab's outstanding programs in materials and chemical sciences, among others - offers a prime environment for collaborative science. The ALS has been a global leader in soft X-ray science for more than two decades and is currently undergoing a large-scale upgrade (ALS-U) that will endow the facility with state-of-the-art X-ray capabilities. What You Will Do:
  • Respond to end-user queries by phone, email, in person, online chat, or via remote access.
  • Assess and resolve user problems involving multiple platforms and architectures.
  • Provide support for PC and Apple hardware, networking, printing, and peripherals.
  • Provide technical assistance with the procurement, configuration, setup, maintenance, and troubleshooting of computer systems, printers, networking equipment, and other hardware.
  • Support standard desktop software, including operating systems, utilities, security, web browsing, antivirus, and office productivity software such as Google Apps.
  • Consult with staff regarding the purchase of new desktops, laptops, servers, and other computer hardware. Request price quotes and place orders.
  • Set up new computers and deliver them to the customer.
  • Install and troubleshoot PC hardware components.
  • Provide hardware and software break/fix support.
  • Provide training to end-users on the use of computer hardware and software.
  • Write or edit end-user training materials and FAQ documentation.
  • May assist with the support of the Windows server infrastructure.
  • Participate in various hardware and software upgrade projects.
  • Perform additional IT-related duties as needed by the department.


What is Required:
  • Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience, and a minimum of 2-3 years of related work experience in Information Technology.
  • Technical Expertise: Experience in IT support, with a strong background in technical troubleshooting and problem-solving. Experience in supporting both Microsoft Windows and Apple macOS systems.
  • Hardware Proficiency: Experience installing, configuring, and maintaining hardware, including desktop and laptop computers, printers, and peripherals. Capable of diagnosing and replacing hardware components such as power supplies, motherboards, memory, hard drives, and video cards.
  • Software Skills: Experience installing and configuring common software applications and productivity tools. Competent in troubleshooting software issues, including Google Apps, Microsoft Office, email clients, and web browsers.
  • Network and Security Knowledge: Knowledge of TCP/IP networking concepts and computer security principles, including firewalls, antivirus software, and patch management.
  • Communication Abilities: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to effectively convey technical information to end-users of varying expertise levels. Ability to interact positively with customers and coworkers.
  • Adaptability: A proactive attitude toward learning new technologies and adapting to evolving IT needs.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. Comfortable working on ladders over 36 inches, and within server racks, under desks, or in other confined spaces. Able to work at a computer console for extended periods.


Desired Qualifications:
  • Ability to install, configure and troubleshoot issues with Linux systems.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Windows Server systems and related software.
  • Knowledge of RAID levels and experience working with RAID storage systems.
  • Knowledge of VMware or other virtual machine technology.
  • Knowledge of Windows Active Directory: domain structure, OU management, users and groups, trust relationships.
  • Knowledge of mobile platforms such as iOS, including configuration and troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge of Windows and macOS cross-platform issues.
  • Related technical certification, e.g., CompTIA A+, Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert, Apple Certified Support Professional.

  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
  • This position is expected to pay $84,600-$105,744, which fits within the full salary range of $84,600-$142,764 for the C77.1. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, and aligned with the internal peer group.
