The Marie Lab in the Infectious Diseases department of the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine seeks a Lab Technician to perform research investigating the pathogenesis of the parasite Cryptosporidium. The individual will assist in experimental work related to mouse and cell culture models of pathogenic infection, as well as the ordering and maintenance of lab supplies and equipment.

The successful candidate will:
  • Set up and perform experiments
  • Collect specimens
  • Prepare culture media, chemicals, reagents, and solutions
  • Maintain a clean laboratory area and assist with overall laboratory maintenance.
  • Maintain a laboratory notebook and other laboratory documentation/paperwork
  • Implement and follow all safety regulations
  • Process purchases for the team using the UVA Marketplace
  • Maintain inventories of laboratory supplies and reagents
  • Interact with vendors to determine appropriate products and best pricing
  • Return damaged or incorrect items
  • Stewardship and inventory of clinical samples
  • Provide routine, technical, and administrative support to research projects.
  • Purify oocysts from stool samples
  • Perform infection of mice, some surgical procedures, whole animal imaging, and mouse tissue dissection
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
  • Occasionally experiments will require work outside of normal work hours on evenings and weekends
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent

Experience: At least 1 year of lab experience, which may include student experience. Bachelor's degree in biological or physical sciences will be considered in lieu of experience.

Licensure: None

PREFERENCES:
  • Experience with basic lab procedures and maintenance, including pipetting, preparation of simple solutions, and cleaning glassware.
  • Experience with maintenance of mouse colonies.
  • Experience with UVA Marketplace.
  • Experience with PCR, cell culture, western blotting, nucleic acid extraction.
  • Ability to communicate expectations and progress clearly, asking for help when needed.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Detail-oriented.
  • Ability to respond to feedback.
  • Highly organized and reliable.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
