Reporting Structure: This is a non-management position within Experimental Surgical Services, which is part of the Department of Surgery, within the University of Minnesota Medical School, within the Academic Health Center at the University of Minnesota.

Department: Department of Surgery

General: Experimental Surgical Services is a preclinical research lab that performs non-clinical research for the purpose of the research and development of medical devices, physician training, new surgical techniques, and other academic projects requiring the use of large and small animal models. ESS serves as a core resource across the University to support interdepartmental and intercollegiate cross-disciplinary research goals. Additionally, ESS performs and supports externally sponsored research studies for regulatory applications investigating patient safety.

Basic Function: The Laboratory Technician assists in all aspects of the daily function of the laboratory at the discretion of senior laboratory staff and the Research Director.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Collects and analyzes biomedical data for inclusion in study reports.
  • Perform surgical induction and recovery of large and small animal models, including but not limited to with intubation, catheterization, calculating and administering pre-anesthetics, multimodal analgesic and resuscitative medications.
  • Applies knowledge of animal physiology and function to perioperative monitoring.
  • Assists the surgical team in its completion of complex laboratory/surgical procedures, including but not limited to open heart surgery, interventional cardiac and vascular procedures, anesthetized imaging procedures (CT, MRI, PET, US,) and intensive care unit (ICU) monitoring and recovery.
  • Preparation of laboratory instruments and imaging equipment (setup, validation, cleaning, return) to be used in sterile surgical procedures.
  • Maintain meticulous records and collect data accurately in accordance with GLP regulations.
  • Is professional, positive and polite in all interactions within the ESS Laboratory.

Supervision Received: This position reports to the ESS Laboratory Research Director.

Supervision Exercised: None.

Qualifications

Requirements:
  • BS/BA and 1 year of related medical research experience, technical degree (e.g. CVT, LAT, LATG) and 2 years of non-clinical research experience, or a combination of education and work experience to equal five years.
  • BS in animal science, animal physiology, pre-veterinary med preferred.

Physical Demands:
  • Standing and sitting for long periods is required for this position.
  • Must be able to lift 50lbs by ones' self.
  • Must rotate on an on-call schedule of evenings, weekends, overnights, and holidays.
  • Must work flexible workweek with core lab hours of 7am - 3:30pm.

Non-Physical Demands:
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access)
  • Proficient in Adobe software platform
  • Proficient in the Google Application Suite (Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides).
  • Experienced and highly skilled at communicating and relationship building
