Position Objective: Provide services as a Laboratory Technician in support of the overall functions of the Laboratory of Malaria Immunology and Vaccinology (LMIV), Division of Intramural Research (DIR) within the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Perform conjugations of lab owned molecules following established laboratory protocols and procedures.
  • Assist the Federal Task Leader in developing novel conjugation methods using available technologies to improve immunogenicity of malaria protein targets, including protein purification, modification and formulation.
  • Characterize conjugated proteins by utilizing current and newly developed analytical methods to document biophysical and biochemical characteristics.
  • Conduct small scale conjugations using established protocols to study malaria vaccines to be tested in preclinical models.
  • Record and write protocols based on small scale conjugation research projects to be used by other sections within the laboratory.
  • Use UV/VIS spectrometry, AKTA, HPLC, UPLC, MALS, SDS-PAGE and other available techniques to analyze malaria vaccine conjugated products; use standard protocols to estimate substitution rates of modified of protein molecules.
  • Organize data collected in the laboratory into a format that can be used to publish manuscripts into scientific manuscripts, slides, posters , and reports.
  • Provide support to other laboratory staff on research projects and techniques.
  • Collaborate with external industry/academia to apply the results of research.
  • Assist the Federal Task Leader with creating new research protocols.


Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in a science related field with at least five (5) years of laboratory experience performing conjugation research using malaria proteins.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of related experience in modification of proteins, protein chemistry, protein assay design, protein purification, and protein characterization.
  • Background in a science related field.
  • Has an interest in malaria vaccine discovery and research.
  • Excellent documentation and communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills including experience with Microsoft Office suite of software.


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with non-technical and technical staff.
  • Detail-oriented and possess strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and projects
