The GlycoMIP User Facility at Virginia Tech is an NSF-funded national resource for the synthesis and characterization of carbohydrate-based materials, advancing the field of glycomaterials through both research and education. Central features of the facility at Virginia Tech are automated glycan synthesizers and materials characterization tools.
The GlycoMIP Laboratory Technician reports to the GlycoMIP Technical Manager and works with the GlycoMIP User Program team, including the Managing Director, Program Coordinator and laboratory scientists. A critical staff-level position, the Laboratory Tech will execute and document carbohydrate-related research experiments in support of research projects and oversee upkeep of synthesis and characterization instruments in the laboratory. The individual will also support use and maintenance of a centralized laboratory management system (Clustermarket).

It is expected that the Laboratory Technician will cross-train with other positions on lab responsibilities as well as be involved with GlycoMIP training and outreach. The Laboratory Technician will be a motivated team player supporting the infrastructure and assisting with the operation of the User Facility on a day-to-day basis; including glycan synthesis and molecular characterization. Key services include mass spectrometry, preparative chromatographic purification, vibrational circular dichroism, surface plasmon resonance, microscale thermophoresis, analytical chromatography, and rheometry. This position will work on chemical reactions related to synthesis in support of laboratory scientists.

Required Qualifications

• Degree or coursework in Chemistry, Biochemistry or related, life-sciences field
• Experience working in a chemical laboratory environment and handling chemicals
• Excellent communication, organization and interpersonal skills
• Ability to follow standard operating protocols in a laboratory setting
• Capable of working in a team environment
• Demonstrated attention-to-detail and documentation of research activities

Preferred Qualifications

• Ability to trouble-shoot equipment
• Practical organic synthesis and characterization skills
• Experience using laboratory management systems
• Experience with training and outreach activities
