The College of Veterinary Medicine invites applicants to apply for the temporary position of Laboratory Technologist 1, Parasitology, located within the Biomedical and Diagnostic Sciences department. The Parasitology Laboratory performs a wide variety of services and interacts with students, faculty, and staff within CVM, along with referral veterinarians, zoos, and independent diagnostic service corporations. The lab is a complex environment; operations include year-round teaching, diagnostics, and research. Major goals of the lab are to provide and promote excellence in education and development, quality diagnostic services, and contribute to scholarship as a team. The position of Laboratory Technologist 1, under the direction of the Laboratory Supervisor, facilitates, learns, and performs a wide variety of diagnostic activities. This position requires a willingness to work with biological samples, including feces, blood, and parasitic organisms. The Laboratory Technologist 1 is a member of the team who must work both collaboratively and independently, and be familiar with the spectrum of activities used in instruction and diagnostics.

Typical Responsibilities:
- Learns and performs general laboratory tasks such as sample accessioning and processing of fresh and preserved feces, blood, urine and tissues.
- Audits quality and safety of every incoming specimen.
- Assesses appropriateness of test requested compared to specimen type, quality, and clinical history and make recommendations to veterinary clients if necessary
- Performs and interprets routine procedures including fecal flotations, fecal egg counts, Knott's tests, Heartworm antigen tests, parasite ID, and various other serological tests on clinical diagnostic samples
- Assists with reporting data to clinicians, veterinary students and referral DVMs by reviewing and transcribing results within published turnaround times.
- Operates standard laboratory equipment and specialized equipment used in parasite diagnostics
- Maintains client confidentiality and interacts professionally with veterinarians, students, staff and faculty.
- Performs and provides student worker/graduate researcher training on general laboratory maintenance and organization/cleanliness
- Provides procuring, analyzing, and cataloging of fecal samples and gross specimens for use in diagnostic reference, including from local animal shelters
- Follows Standard Operating Procedures as a part of the laboratory's internal quality assurance program
- Monitors expirations dates for test kits and reagents
- Troubleshoots tests and equipment while adhering to safety protocols.
- Complies with shipping hazardous and infectious materials regulations
- Maintains current training and adheres to all established laboratory and university protocols for safe handling and use of biological and chemical hazards
- Assists teaching personnel (when needed and as time allows)
Minimum Qualifications:
- This is an entry level position. Bachelor's Degree in biology, chemistry, microbiology, wildlife health, animal science, biochemistry, medical technology or a related field. Familiarity with basic laboratory procedures.
Preferred Qualifications:
- One year of working in a clinical or diagnostic laboratory setting preferred.
