To develop, implement, and direct a library media program that supports the educational philosophy of the Huntsville City School System and encourages the use of instructional technology to meet the media and technology needs of the school.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Plans, administers, and supervises the library media program in order to develop policies and procedures for efficient operation and optimal service and to evaluate and modify the program as needed.
  • Provides and facilitates a physical environment designed to provide services and resources for teachers and students in the areas of literacy, information literacy, and technological access.
  • Assists educators in planning for the use and integration of the full range of emerging technologies and digital curriculum to meet the needs of the school district.
  • Evaluates the current technology status of the school and assists in preparing an action plan for incremental improvements.
  • Designs and implements a collection development plan which includes selecting and acquiring resources, maintaining a current inventory, weeding materials, and assessing and evaluating the collection.
  • Supports teachers with technical and curricular needs and serves as a liaison between digital curriculum providers and school administration, faculty, and students by providing assistance with digital initiatives.
  • Establishes an efficient system for classifying, cataloging, circulating, and inventorying all media center materials according to district-wide standards.
  • Maintains school technology devices, including but not limited to distribution, processing, and barcoding.
  • Informs teachers, students, and administrators of new materials and recent media/technology developments within their specific instructional area.
  • Maintains research-based knowledge of current legislation and regulations and collaborates with staff and administrators to develop and implement policies and procedures related to copyright, acceptable use of information networks, and intellectual freedom issues.
  • Selects, collects, organizes, stores, and disseminates information in various formats.
  • Seeks teacher and student participation in selection and evaluation of materials, information databases, and technologies to support learning objectives.
  • Recommends and participates in a variety of approved trainings and activities to address professional learning needs of teachers and other faculty, including in-service programs, technology seminars, conferences, workshops, etc.
  • Collaborates with teachers to develop curricular content that integrates information literacy skills into instructional activities and maintains active engagement strategies.
  • Supports cooperative resource sharing with other library media/technology centers and local, state, and national information agencies.
  • Prepares and administers the media center budget and keeps records of all expenditures to ensure fiscal responsibility.
  • Trains, supervises, and provides guidance to library aides as well as parent and student volunteers.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

A Master's Degree in Library and Information Studies from an accredited institution. Must possess and maintain a valid state teaching certificate.

Physical Requirements

Exerts 20-50 pounds of force occasionally, 10-25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly.

Terms of Employment

Nine month year. Salary as recommended by the Superintendent and approved by the Board.
