The incumbent watches for unsafe practices and persons in distress around swimming pools; performs simple maintenance and cleanup of pool facilities; administers first aid; maintains order and controls undesirable activities (i.e. running, horseplaying, and unauthorized food in pool areas, etc.); tests pool water and adds chemicals as needed safely; and opens and closes the pool areas. Must possess a current Lifeguard certificate issued by the American Red Cross.

This position is not eligible for telework, this position is in person only.

Working Conditions
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must possess and maintain sufficient strength, agility, endurance, and sensory ability to perform the duties contained within the duty statement. Lifeguards will be required to perform the following essential functions: must be able to lift 50 pounds without assistance; must be able to participate in client containment, intervention or restraint; must have the ability to work various shifts and hours as arranged with the Supervisor.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Ongoing interaction and instruction with clients. Potential exposure to communicable diseases, blood-borne pathogens, and other conditions common to a clinical nursing environment. Spending time performing custody tasks which includes: escorting forensic clients in the facility; distributing and accounting for all training equipment and supplies to prevent their use as weapons; inspecting facilities to identify security breaches that could lead to the escape of a forensic client; and observing and intervening in forensic client behaviors that may injure people, damage property, or signal impending escape attempts.

COORDINATION: Normal working hours vary. Hours and shifts may vary depending on the need of the program and/or facility. Not to exceed 40 hours per week. Schedule arranged with Supervisor.

Department Information
The California Department of Developmental Services (DDS) is the agency through which the State of California provides services and supports to individuals with developmental disabilities.

These disabilities include intellectual disability, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, autism and related conditions. Services are provided through state-operated developmental centers and community facilities, and contracts with 21 nonprofit regional centers. The regional centers serve as a local resource to help find and access the services and supports available to individuals with developmental disabilities and their families.
