The Wisconsin DNR is hiring an LTE (Limited Term Employee) - Wildlife Technician Advanced, in Green Bay, WI.

Position Summary

The Wildlife Technician - Advanced will work under the direction of the Field Ecologist and Habitat Biologist. This position will help plan, coordinate, and perform a broad range of native community management and restoration activities, including, but not limited to: prescribed fire, forest management and conversion, invasive plants and brush control, and some heavy equipment operation.

60% Under the direction of the field ecologist and habitat biologist, conduct habitat management and invasive species control activities on state-managed lands, including but not limited to the use of herbicides and various pieces of equipment (chainsaws, brush cutters). Assist with prescribed burning on state lands including but not limited to; firebreak delineation, construction, mop-up and occasional overnight monitoring.

20% Complete property management reports and create GIS maps, and enter accomplishments into department land management systems.

10% Conduct various non-game wildlife surveys such as rare plants, invertebrates, and reptiles within the assigned working area.

10% Assist on other Natural Heritage Conservation field projects as assigned.

Salary Information

This position pays between $20.43 per hour and is in pay schedule and range 06-14. Compensation will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan.

Job Details

This is a Limited Term Employment (LTE) position and will not automatically lead to permanent state employment or be entitled to the same benefits as permanent employees.

1) Residency: To be considered for this position, you must be a resident of the State of Wisconsin.

A Wisconsin resident is a person who:

a. Has established a residence, as defined in s. 6.10(1), in this state not less than 10 days earlier;

b. Has resided in this state for not less than a total of one year out of the immediately preceding 5 years;

c. Is eligible to register to vote in this state; or

d. Is the spouse of a person meeting the requirements of par. (a), (b), or (c)." s.230.03(12), Wis. Stats.

Qualifications

In addition to the required qualifications below, the selected candidate must be eligible to drive a state vehicle and meet the following criteria:
  • Have a valid driver's license
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Have a minimum of two years of licensed driving experience
  • Have not had three (3) or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents in the past two (2) years
  • Have no OWI/DUI violations within the past year

Qualified candidates will have the following:
  • Previous experience or college-level training in habitat restoration and management, or related natural resource field
  • Experience maintaining small engines and other tools commonly used in habitat management work
  • Experience with pumps, engines, and tools used for prescribed fire
  • Knowledge and understanding of the principles of restoration ecology & management techniques
  • Knowledge of Wisconsin's remnant plant communities, rare and listed plants and animals
  • Experience working with MS Office and GIS.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability and willingness to work outdoors in inclement weather conditions and perform physically demanding work
  • Ability to pass the Work Capacity Test at the "Field Test" (moderate) level. Employment is contingent upon passage of this physical fitness requirement annually

In addition, well qualified candidates will have the following:
  • Possess a bachelor's degree in botany, wildlife ecology, biology, or related natural resources field
  • Experience in the restoration of Wisconsin remnant plant communities and associated certifications (e.g., chainsaw, pesticide/herbicide use, ATV/UTV, tractor, etc)
  • Certified as a FFT2 level - completed courses: S130/190, L180, I100 and I700
  • Experience operating heavy equipment
  • Ability to communicate effectively with project supervisors, co-workers, contractors, internal and external partners, and the public
