About us:

The Solid Waste Division provides weekly curbside collection of household garbage, yard waste collection, and bulk waste collection.

What you will be doing:

Performs routine manual work in the collection of garbage, trash, and yard waste in the Solid waste Division of the Public Works department.

Expected Hiring Range:$37,315.20 - 41,046.72. Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications. A starting salary above the range listed may be considered for highly qualified individuals not to exceed the maximum of the grade.

Examples of Duties

• Works as a member of a trash, yard waste or garbage collection crew to load trash, debris and junked furniture and appliances from roadsides.
• Cleans area around cans and picks up loose trash.
• Assists with dumping solid waste at the landfill.
• Assists with cleaning and maintaining trucks and tools.
• Works in a manner that ensures the safety of self and co-workers.
• May operate non-CDL required vehicles as needed; pickup trucks and vehicles less than 26,000 pounds.
• Use of Mobile 311 device to record locations for pickup and to report challenged areas.
• Performs related duties as required.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Some knowledge of the occupational hazards of working in traffic and with garbage and refuse
• Ability to perform heavy manual work at a steady pace for an extended period in varying weather conditions.

Minimum Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED equivalency is preferred and experience working outdoors.
• 6 months of work experience in general maintenance.
• Valid North Carolina driver's License

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

• Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, feeling and repetitive motions.
• Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects and pick up 50 pounds of weight without assistance.
• Must possess visual acuity to operate a solid waste vehicle collecting garbage and refuse.
