Responsibilities

FSU is searching for a Director to facilitate and implement a comprehensive Environmental Health and Safety program in a dynamic, fast-paced academic research and development laboratory and to partner with FSU campus for collaborative EHS programs.

Directs the NHMFL Safety Program and serve as safety expert, process, and design reviewer that works with subject matter experts on teams that utilize high-power,high-energy systems. Liaison with scientists, engineers, safety experts, students, and campus to facilitate and review high-energy, high-power processes and systems.

Supervise the NHMFL Safety Team and provide annual reviews for each member. Approves and signs off on safety procedures as the Safety Lead and determines the need for additional subject matter experts when applicable.

Strict adherence, compliance, implementation, and demonstrated commitment to the tenets of the Integrated Safety Management Program. Integrate with NHMFL workforce across all levels (e.g., staff, technicians, students, faculty, director, from work floor to executive level).

Identify and eliminate hazardous activities and help develop/modify engineering and/or administrative controls to reduce risk. Review designs for adherence to applicable codes and standards (e.g., AISC, ASME, ANSI).

Lead in the evaluation, calculation verification, and safety review of mechanical designs of mechanical structures and lifting systems for rated loads. Conduct and review Task Hazard Analysis procedures, Risk, and Failure Mode Analyses in developing safety procedures for internal NHMFL-related research and external contractors.

Conduct and manage regular safety inspections, both formal and informal, to identify potential problems and initiate corrective actions to protect employees from hazardous behaviors, work processes or material conditions and facilitate compliance with NHMFL safety program. Participate and chair various committees at the NHMFL and FSU campus.

Provides continuous review, improvements, and expansion of on-line, classroom and hands-on safety training to facilitate effective safety training strategies. Participate in and support safety across all lab-wide activities and collaborates with FSU main campus in all initiatives for EHS compliance and effectiveness.

Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree and six years experience in a related science or research services field; or a high school diploma/equivalency and ten years of experience in the same areas. (Note: or a combination of post high school education and experience equal to ten years in same.)

  • Skill in preparing clear and concise reports, policies, procedures, correspondences, and other written materials.
