What you will do...
  • Contribute to the implementation of the Reserve's research and monitoring programs.
  • Assist with the chemical analysis of water samples in the OWC analytical research laboratory using standard methods.
  • Assist with field and laboratory work necessary to calibrate, maintain, and deploy equipment used for monitoring and transmitting water quality and quantity data.
  • Coordinate and participate in water sample collections, including scheduling, washing, and labeling sample containers, and deploying/retrieving bottles used by automatic water samplers.
  • Assist with data collection, management, analysis, and reporting.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications...
  • Familiarity with monitoring the physical and chemical characteristics of estuarian and coastal ecosystems.
  • Knowledge of environmental science, natural history, communications, environmental health or a related field.
  • Experience with the preparation of chemical reagents and standards, and the operation of benchtop equipment for the analysis of nutrient and carbon concentrations in water samples is desired.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft products (e.g. Excel, Word, Office).
  • Understanding of water safety and First Aid/CPR certifications.
  • Ability to swim.
  • Experience using self-powered boats or motorboats.
  • Be able to lift at least 35 pounds.
  • Be tolerant of working in poor conditions (e.g., weather, biting insects, poison ivy).

  • This is a part-time, grant-funded position, with potential for renewal.
Work Hours and Work Conditions...
  • This position will have flexible hours during the work week.
  • Up to 40 hours per week.
  • May include unusual working hours (early mornings and/or late evenings) and some weekend work.
  • May include conditions ranging from extreme cold/rain/snow to high heat and humidity, possible exposure to biting insects/wildlife and poisonous plants.

Qualifications

Formal education in arithmetic that includes addition, subtraction, multiplication & division & in reading & speaking common English vocabulary; valid driver's license; valid Commercial Driver's License required if motor equipment is of type & size regulated by Section 4506.01 & 4506.12 of Ohio Revised Code.
