Why does the job exist?

The New Mexico Works (NMW) Career Development Specialist (CDS) - Supervisor will:
  • Provide supervision and oversight to CDS's who will assist Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) customers who have long-term barriers which prohibit them from meeting TANF mandatory requirements;
  • Assist customers improve their housing situations, and mental health issues;
  • Assist customers with applications for Social Security Disability benefits;
  • Work closely with customers to identify their barriers, and help alleviate barriers to enable customers to apply for and secure permanent employment that will enable them to leave TANF.


How does it get done?

The New Mexico Works (NMW) Career Development Specialist (CDS) - Supervisor responsible for:
  • Ensuring data entry is correct and completed in a timely manner for all NMW participants in Automated System Program and Eligibility Network (ASPEN) and WorkPath;
  • Making recommendations for modifications to a participant IRP and/or WPA in accordance with HSD policies, assessment results, and Career Consultant recommendations;
  • Working with TANF supervisors to ensure staff are held accountable for following procedures and protocols, as well as program outcomes;
  • Regularly updating the TANF Manager of events impacting individuals receiving support and services;
  • Working collaboratively with others to accomplish goals and assigned tasks;
  • Meeting expected outcomes or advise supervisors of any needed direction, support, or resources to ensure attainment of expected outcomes;
  • Participating fully, productively, and positively in team meetings to assist in achieving desired outcomes;
  • Informing program staff of pertinent information that may assist in providing quality support to the department.

Minimum Qualification

Associate's degree in Social Services, Education, Government, Human Resources or Business Administration and three (3) years of experience in customer service, administrative support, business administration, human resources, recruitment, placement, processing personnel transactions and/or eligibility determination in a private or public sector and/or social welfare program. Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License.

Working Conditions

Long periods of sitting, standing, extended computer and telephone use. Excessive use of keyboard and viewing computer monitor. Repetitive hand movement. Ability to lift objects up to 25 pounds. The incumbent will be required to perform outreach and drive long distances. Travel to include overnight stays may be required.
