The New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy (NM LEA) is an organizational unit of the Department of Public Safety (§ 9-19-7, Subparagraph C, NMSA 1978), controlled and supervised by policy set by the Law Enforcement Academy Board (§ 29-7-3, NMSA 1978). The NMLEA is established to provide a planned program of basic training and in-service law enforcement training by furnishing instruction and seminars to consistently upgrade law enforcement within the state (§ 29-7-2, NMSA 1978).

Why does the job exist?

The Training & Development Specialist A for the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy exists to establish minimum standards of training for police officer and telecommunicator certification and to enumerate curriculum requirements for law enforcement agencies In the state of New Mexico, establishing criteria for applications to attend the New Mexico law enforcement academy.

How does it get done?

Develop basic law enforcement training curriculum's, assist in the development of advanced and/or specialized law enforcement training projects and courses. This position will be responsible for directing and coordinating training activities, developing goals and objectives as well as researching policy requirements for training activities as outlined New Mexico Statute Annotated [NMSA 10-29-9), including but not limited to assisting with the development of assessment instruments to determine training needs and priorities such as preparing instruction manuals and review training curricula, develop evaluation instruments to properly assess effectiveness of programs, develop course content and coordinate training opportunities.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have at least two (2) years of experience in training, staff development, designing courses, and/or producing instructional aids/materials.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's Degree in any field and two (2) years of experience in training, staff development, designing courses, and/or producing instructional aids/materials. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.

Employment Requirements

Employment is subject to a pre-employment background investigation and fingerprinting in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations; and is conditional pending results. Continued employment is contingent upon remaining felony free, per Section 5.12.1.1 of the Criminal Justice Information Systems Security Policy.

In addition, the selected candidate must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and a current Defensive Driving Certificate from the State of New Mexico; or pass and receive the Defensive Driving Certificate within six (6) months of date of hire.

Working Conditions

Much of the work is conducted in an office environment where the specialist develops training materials, conducts administrative tasks and collaborates with colleagues. Work In training facilities where they deliver hands-on training sessions, workshops, and simulations. Typically, this role operates on a standard work schedule during business hours, Monday through Friday. Some flexibility in scheduling may be required to accommodate training sessions that could occur outside regular house or on weekends. There may be occasional travel to attend meetings, workshops, or conferences related to training and development.
