Job Description

Purpose:

Under the direction of the Director of Nursing, Maternal Child Health, is responsible for the orientation, staff development activities, and assigned educational programs for staff within the inpatient Maternal Child department including OBGYN/ PEDS outpatient clinic.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
• Plans, organizes, revises, conducts, and evaluates didactic and clinical orientation curriculum/programs for new nursing staff; supervises clinical experience of nurses during orientation period; makes recommendations for follow-up orientation when appropriate.
• Acts as a mentor for new and incumbent staff.
• Develops, implements, and evaluates educational activities based on learning needs survey.
• Encourages/assists nursing personnel in attending internal/external educational activities; maintains attendance records for programs.
• Circulates schedules and individually communicates information regarding classes, conferences, and courses.
• Maintains educational records of programs presented/attended; submits reports in a timely manner.
• Participates in the evaluation of nursing practice and makes recommendations for the development/revision of nursing standards.
• Serves as a change agent for nursing; provides clinical guidance for overall nursing discipline.
• Participates in developing/writing policies and procedures, and establishing standards to ensure productivity and safe patient care
• Attends conferences and workshops to maintain professional competence.
• Serves on nursing/hospital committees as assigned.
• Collaborates with the Director of Service and nursing management staff to identify desired outcomes, problem areas and current trends and to plan strategies to reach mutual goals,
• Conducts regular meetings with all the staff in the maternal child health units for adequate communication and problem solving in collaboration with the Director of Service.
• Serves as a resource person to maternal child nursing staff and assume responsibility for the management of maternal child health when needed.
• Actively participates in scheduled supervisory meetings/classes.
• Possesses strong computer expertise and ability to educate computer users.
• Participates in nursing research activities and special projects related to nursing practice and encourages staff involvement.
• Participates in accreditation and PI activities.
• Assists in the evaluation of new products and equipment and arranges in-service for staff.
For Assignment to Nurse Educator Level II
• In addition to meeting the qualification requirements of Nurse Educator Level I, must be assigned to a highly specialized area (e.g., critical care, emergency services, perioperative care, maternal child health) or to a group of specialty areas.

Minimum Qualifications
1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and
2. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA); and
3. A Master's Degree in Nursing, or a related nursing or education field, from an accredited college or university; and
4. Three (3) years of experience as a registered nurse in specialty area(s), including:
a. One (1) year providing nursing education and training in specialty area(s); or
b. Holds a valid and current certification as a Nurse Educator.

For Assignment to Nurse Educator Level II
1. In addition to meeting the qualification requirements of Nurse Educator Level I, must be assigned to a highly specialized area (e.g., critical care, emergency services, perioperative care) or to a group of specialty areas.
