Job Description
1. Participates in developing the philosophy and objectives of the Nursing Education & Research Department.
2. Participates in the development, revision, and implementation of department policies and procedures to assure attainment of goals and standards set by Nursing Department.
3. Collaborates with education and research nurse educators, clinical nurse leadership, and PI staff to assess education needs of practicing nurses in the inpatient and outpatient clinical settings.
4. Evaluates quality and appropriateness of health care delivery by reviewing performance improvement activities and other outcome measures and comparing results against established benchmarks and evidence-based practice guidelines.
5. Plans, directs, organizes and evaluates orientation, in-service, and continuing education for nursing personnel and other departments as needed.
6. Utilizes current educational theory and principles in the development of education programs.
7. Implements a variety of teaching strategies appropriate to content, setting, learners' needs, and desired learner outcomes.
8. Utilizes adult education methods and practical approaches to developing and assessing clinical skills.
9. Maintains documentation of activities including, but not limited to curricula, competencies, attendance sheets, evaluation of program objectives.
10. Models critical and reflective thinking practices for staff and students.
11. Assumes responsibility to ensure provision of quality patient care.
12. Assesses needs and implements measures to attain standards and recommendations.
13. Evaluates quality of patient care through reports from quality assurance, and patient relations department as well as by observations during nursing rounds.
14. Provides guidance to nursing administrators to ensure continuity and an acceptable level of patient care on evenings and nights.
15. Promotes inter- and intra-departmental cooperation and collaboration.
16. Attends meetings with nursing as well as other departments to promote good communication and close collaboration.
17. Assists in problem resolution that may arise involving the Nursing Department.
18. Participates in developing and maintaining sound relationships with community and professional groups.
19. Conducts and/or attends meetings and committees as assigned both within the hospital and with external agencies.
20. Promotes personal and professional growth. Attends conferences and/or completes online training programs for continuing professional and personal growth and shares information with staff.
21. Functions effectively within the organizational structure.
22. Reports to administrator for nursing any activities affecting nursing staff and patient care.
23. Assists the administrator for nursing in maintaining a system of records and reports.
24. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and
2. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA); and
3. A Master's Degree in Nursing, or a related nursing or education field, from an accredited college or university; and
4. Three (3) years of experience as a registered nurse in specialty area(s), including:
a. One (1) year providing nursing education and training in specialty area(s); or
b. Holds a valid and current certification as a Nurse Educator.

For Assignment to Nurse Educator Level II
1. In addition to meeting the qualification requirements of Nurse Educator Level I, must be assigned to a highly specialized area (e.g., critical care, emergency services, perioperative care) or to a group of specialty areas.
