Job Description

Implements, monitors, evaluates, and participates in the development of nursing education programs, initiatives and other developmental activities. Works collaboratively with the Senior Director of Nursing Education to ensure nursing practice and training aligns with system goals, operational standards, and regulatory standards.

General tasks and responsibilities will include:
  • Engage in system level strategic planning to carry out the mission and vision of New York City Health and Hospitals to improve quality and safety of services provided to patients and ensures regulatory requirements related to oncological nursing care are considered.
  • Participates in competency assessment by monitoring nursing staff's knowledge and compliance to ensure that National Patient Safety Goals are maintained and by participating in competency validation of newly appointed and incumbent staff.
  • Conducts program evaluations that measure learning impact and outcomes against strategic goals and objectives of the heath care setting to enhance the effectiveness of clinical care and employee performance.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of chemotherapy drugs and radiation therapy as well as management of side effects and adverse reactions.
  • Works cooperatively with nursing and physician leadership to enhance communication and ensure current work flow aligns with evidenced based best practices to maximize the efficiency and delivery of safe patient care throughout the continuum.
  • Develop, track, and analyze performance improvement data to maintain sustainability of initiatives.
  • Plan and direct in-services for new equipment, products, processes, and systems; manages the resulting implementation of changes in nursing practice and organization.
  • Establish, implement, and monitor adherence to policies, practices, procedures and performance standards for nursing education, including compliance, quality and budgetary guidelines.
  • Maintain professional competence through participation in continuing education programs, activities, and other appropriate nursing professional development opportunities.

The following differentials apply to this position:
  • EDU - education differential
    • $1,200 if Master's degree in allied health field
    • $2,000 if Master's degree in Nursing (MSN)
    • $2,500 if Doctorate in Nursing Practice (DNP)
  • LCN - certification differential
    • $1,878 for an oncology certification from the approved list
  • NEX - nursing experience differential
    • Up to 10 years external for $9,100. External experience must be in the same or comparable title to Nurse Educator for it to count
    • Internal candidates have all of their NYSNA experience count toward the NEX


Minimum Qualifications
1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and
2. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA); and
3. A Master's Degree in Nursing, or a related nursing or education field, from an accredited college or university; and
4. Three (3) years of experience as a registered nurse in specialty area(s), including:
a. One (1) year providing nursing education and training in specialty area(s); or
b. Holds a valid and current certification as a Nurse Educator.

Department Preferences

  • Holds a valid and current certification in Oncology Nursing
  • Certification in Nursing Professional Development
  • Minimum of three (3) years of oncology nursing experience as a registered nurse


KNOWLEDGEABLE IN:
  • ANA Standards of Nursing Practice
