GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT

RSMG's responsibilities have increased exponentially since its inception, both in terms of additional programs under its direction as well as a 200% growth in research space. The amount of space devoted to research at MGH grew from 431,827 nasf in FY 2000 to 1.3M nasf in FY 2016, including the addition of a number of large buildings and the addition of two research campuses.

The Department has responsibility for management and operation of a majority of MGH's major research buildings, with the goal of facilitating the paradigm of interdepartmental collaborative science, promoting cost reduction and reducing administrative demands on the MGH research community. RSMG is responsible for developing and managing an annual research building lease budget >$15M.

The Research Space Management Group (RSMG) is responsible to ECOR and the SVP for Research for monitoring all space owned or leased by MGH for the purpose of research activities; this includes research space allocation, management, and design. The department is also responsible for collecting, analyzing, interpreting, and reporting all information regarding the allocation and utilization of research space.

The department is responsible for the identification of space utilization trends involving MGH research space that may indicate that space is not being used to the most efficient and highest possible use. RSMG investigates the circumstances surrounding these situations and prepares recommended resolutions for review by the Research Space Advisory Committee (RSAC) and, if necessary, by the Research Institute Executive Committee.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The manager works under the general supervision of the RSMG Operations Director.

Works closely with Buildings and Grounds, Safety, Radiation Safety, Environmental Services Facilities and Engineering, Supply Side Management, and Planning and Real Estate to ensure effective delivery of tenant services. Collaborates with these departments to develop and maintain programs and policies which provide appropriate and effective service delivery to the research community.

Through hands on partnership and the development of thoughtful service and management strategies, the Operations Manager focuses on optimizing facility related service, quality, and expense saving strategies.

Interacts with senior members of the research community and participates in facility-wide planning efforts. Participates in design of new research facilities from planning through completion, serving as a resource regarding operations requirements. The goal of every planning and design effort is to optimize capital resources through more efficient space utilization and greater collaboration between laboratories and departments.

Participates as a member on various hospital committees as appropriate.

Incumbent serves as a member of the Research Space Management Group and responsible for providing operational and analytical support to researchers within the Research Enterprise

Attends and participates in meetings and committees within MGH and Partners to keep abreast of current issues that may affect the research environment.

Participates in the management of the Research Space Management Group Glasswashing Core

Is a member of the Laboratory Safety Survey Team which surveys all laboratory space at the institution on a regular basis to assist researchers with maintaining a safe working environment.

Performs regular laboratory safety rounds with the Boston Fire Department as an official hospital representative.

Works closely with Senior Leadership to develop and implement various emergency management and laboratory safety programs including, but not limited to, planning for the evacuation of research space, research response to catastrophic emergencies, the monthly Safety Bulletin, and Laboratory Cleanup Days.

Serves as the research representative to the biennial Office Supplies Recycling Day at MGH.

Acts as a contact for investigators who need support in navigating the institutional bureaucracy and/or resolving issues. Is responsible for analyzing problem areas, developing solutions, identifying an effective path to problem resolution, and working with support departments to develop a plan to prevent further occurrences, if necessary.

Provides conference room management and AV expertise and support for RSMG managed conference areas.

Helps plan special events for the hospital and for the Research Institute.

Frequent off schedule communications from Buildings and Grounds and Police Security concerning research building-related issues-On Call 24-7 with possible travel to facilities off hours.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE:

Familiarity with research facilities management, customer service, and laboratory management.

EDUCATION:

Bachelor's degree Preferred

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

Familiarity with research laboratory operations and equipment as well as the regulations and operational policies for research animal facilities preferred.

Computer skills are essential, as are analytical skills necessary to make sound recommendations.
