The Reality Labs (RL) team at Meta is helping more people around the world come together and connect through world-class Augmented/Virtual Reality (AR/VR) hardware and software. The potential of AR/VR to change the world is immense and we're just getting started. Our Technology Engineering for Devices (TED) team explores, develops, and delivers new cutting-edge technologies that serve as the foundation of current and future VR/AR/Wearable products. From mixed reality and human interaction to natural inputs and beyond, TED is focused on transforming new technologies from early concept to product by iterating, prototyping, and realizing the human value and new experiences these technologies enable. Camera and Depth Optics team is looking for an optical Engineer to focus on end-to-end ownership of developing and bringing up to mass production cutting edge optical components, including refractive, diffractive and metasurfaces.

Optical Engineer Responsibilities


  • Develop and design cutting edge Diffractive Optical Elements (DOE) and Metalenses.

  • Drive the vendor for maturity in optical process, performance, yield, quality, reliability, and ramp new optical components and systems for full mass production readiness.

  • Lead design validation, lab characterization and failure analysis of diffractive and metasurface optical components and systems.

  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally to work with manufacturing companies to realize designs.


Minimum Qualifications


  • BS in Optics, Physics or related field.

  • 5+ years experience related to diffractive and metasurface design.

  • Knowledge of fabrication techniques for diffractive and metasurfaces along with fabrication limits.

  • Experience working with statistical analysis, data visualization and measurement system analysis tools such as Matlab, JMP and Python.

  • 3+ years experience with optical design tools such Zemax, CodeV.

  • 5+ years experience with FDTD and RCWA solvers. Knowledge of Physical Optics simulation software packages such as Virtual Lab/Lumerical/R-Soft.


Preferred Qualifications


  • MS or PhD in Optics, Electrical Engineering or related field.

  • Knowledge of production process controls and process experience.

  • Knowledge of standard procedures in creating SOWs, delivery and support of the test equipment at contract manufacturers.

  • Experience with multiple full life cycle product launches (preferably in consumer electronics).

  • Interest in hands-on testing of optical modules and components. manage test data and reporting outcomes

  • Experience operating in heavily cross functional and ambiguous work environments.
