Introduction

The Department of Safety and Professional Services mission is to promote economic growth and stability while protecting the citizens of Wisconsin as designated by statute. DSPS and related professional boards protect the citizens of Wisconsin by ensuring the safe and competent practice of licensed professionals; performing inspections of commercial buildings, amusement rides, boilers, elevators, pressurized g as systems, and electrical systems; and performing plan reviews of commercial building, plumbing, fire suppression, elevators, boilers, and private onsite wastewater treatments systems.

What We Are Looking For: A detail-oriented individual with the ability to work independently to coordinate the legal projects, provide professional support to attorneys in the drafting of legal documents, and research legal and factual issues. This position will be hired at the entry or advanced level, depending on qualifications.

Position Summary

This position is responsible for coordinating the legal review process for credential applications and providing professional support to attorneys in the drafting of legal documents, researching of legal and factual issues, and management of application files.
  • Proofread documents drafted by others, ensuring that legal documents are accurate, complete, and error-free.
  • Communicate with applicants regarding application status and inquiries regarding legal review of the application.
  • At the direction of the team attorneys, file documents, such as pleadings, motions, briefs, and recommended proposed decisions and orders, with the Division of Hearings and Appeals and serve the same documents on opposing parties.
  • Make appropriate arrangements for hearings, including scheduling court reporters and coordinating appearances of witnesses at hearings.
  • Research legal and factual issues involving credentialing matters.

Salary Information

The Paralegal position is in schedule-range (07-04) with an annual salary of $56,160 - $70,720. The Paralegal Advanced position is in schedule-range (07-03) with an annual salary of $62,400-$79,040. Pay is set depending on qualifications. A twelve month probationary period is required in both positions. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the Wisconsin State Compensation Plan.

Certain positions within this Department may allow remote/work from home flexibility for a portion of their work schedule, depending on the needs of the position and the work unit. This topic and any remote work flexibility that may be available will be discussed in more detail in the interview process. For permanent positions that allow remote work flexibility, it is not anticipated that working outside of Wisconsin (or bordering cities) will be allowed because positions may need to report to office locations in Wisconsin on short notice.

Qualifications

Qualified applicants will have experience with all of the following:
  • Experience using computer programs such as Microsoft Office, Outlook, Excel, Adobe, SharePoint, or comparable. Experience may include activities such as accessing emails in a shared mailbox, using AdobePro to edit PDFs, or performing multiple level filter and/or sorting within a spreadsheet.
  • Experience communicating with customers in writing.
  • Experience drafting legal documents.
  • Experience performing tasks with a high level of attention to detail. Experience may include activities such as drafting correspondence without grammatical errors or proofreading attorney drafts.

In addition to the qualifications listed above, well qualified applicants will have experience with at least one of the following:
  • Paralegal certification, related degree or experience working in a paralegal role.
  • Experience working with state statutes and administrative code.
  • Experience with administrative law, criminal law or litigation.
In addition to the qualifications listed above, a qualified candidate at the advanced level will have experience with at least one of the following:
  • Experience supporting multiple attorneys.
  • Experience using and maintaining case management and reporting tools (such as SharePoint Lists or comparable application or software platforms).
