Job Description

Summary of Duties:

Position performs a variety of health-related essential duties and responsibilities associated with patients in the eye clinic with a strong focus in Ophthalmic Imaging. Position also performs clerical duties as needed and is an integral member of the patient's care team. Bilingual in Spanish strongly preferred.

Position supports Ophthalmic providers in the care of eye clinic patients through a focus on diagnostic imaging. Position includes performance of history taking and involves the use of various ophthalmic equipment in order to obtain and document eye measurements. Activities also include triage of walk-in patients, documentation of history and chief complaint and collection of initial patient data. Candidate must have interest in and be capable of learning fundamentals of ocular diseases, conditions and treatment as well as master imaging equipment in order to participate in patient testing. Previous experience in ophthalmic imaging strongly preferred, however, clinic will train. Greet patients arriving to the clinic by introducing yourself with name and title, using two patient identifiers to identify patient.
1. Escort patient to the exam room and prepare for the patient visit by obtaining patient history and chief complaint.
2. Obtain and document in the electronic medical record eye measurements using ophthalmic computerized equipment. Measurements include auto-refractions, lens measurements, eye pressures and cornea thicknesses.
3. Performs diagnostic imaging, specifically Optical Coherence Tomography and Fundus photography according to provider orders.
4. Uses safe body mechanics to assist patients in and out of testing chairs and/or wheelchairs when necessary.
5. Monitor and record refrigerator temperature and report out any out of range values.
6. Maintain infection control standards including proper hand washing and use of standard precautions.
7. Cleans and disinfects equipment after each patient use.
8. Assist with instrument preparation for in-office procedures and assists with dirty instrument collection for sterilization offsite.
9. Prepare/stock exam rooms for examination by ensuring that the rooms are adequately stocked with supplies, clean and disinfect equipment after each patient use and ensures testing and exam rooms are in order for the next patient to be seen.
10. Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
11. Assists with opening rooms in the morning and closing rooms at the end of the day.
12. Supports front desk duties during staffing hardships as needed. Tasks include scheduling, appointment reminders, in basket message handling and referral work queues as directed. Computer literacy is essential.

Minimum Qualifications
1. High school diploma or its educational equivalent, approved by a State's Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization; and
2. Successful completion of a NYS Department of Health prescribed training program for Phlebotomy, satisfactory to the Laboratory Director; and
3. Completion of a health care setting-based training program in the performance of electrocardiographs and basic life support procedures including certification in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation.
Special Note:
In addition to meeting the qualifications above, assignment to a long-term care facility requires a New York State Nurse's Aide Certificate.

Department Preferences

EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
• A four year high school diploma or its education equivalent, and
• Successful completion of a NYS Department of Health prescribed training program for phlebotomy, satisfactory to the laboratory director and appropriate to the workload of the facility.
• Completion of a facility-based training program in the performance of basic clinical techniques and electrocardiograph.
• Current BCLS Certification.
