Responsibilities
The Magnet Science and Technology Division of the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL) is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to perform electromagnetic, mechanical, and thermal analyses using numerical methods to help design the next-generation superconducting magnets. Development of these systems requires experience and proficiency in 2-D and 3-D Finite Element Analysis and a strong understanding of structural mechanics, heat-transfer, and electromagnetism. The candidate must have good written and verbal communications skills and the ability to interact constructively with physicists, engineers, designers, and technicians. It is expected that results will be presented at international conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals.
Responsibilities include Conduct electromagnetic, structural, and thermal analyses on existing or new superconducting magnets. Create magnet designs based on high temperature and/or low temperature superconductors for prescribed requirements of field strength, uniformity, and other operating conditions. Model components or systems utilizing commercial finite element software (ANSYS, Vector Fields, COMSOL) and in-house FORTRAN and MATLAB codes. Document engineering designs through written reports and presentation materials.
Qualifications
Qualifications include a Ph. D. in engineering or physics. Experience with finite element modeling using ANSYS, COMSOL, or Vector Fields. Capable of programming in ANSYS APDL, FORTRAN, and MATLAB. Familiar with the general properties and issues of REBCO superconductors.
