Public Health Division Southwest Region is comprised of eight counties and works to promote health and wellness, improve health outcomes, and assure safety net services for all people in New Mexico.

Why does the job exist?

This position will directly supervise and plan the delivery of clinical public health nursing services in Socorro, and Sierra Counties. Incumbent will provide staff supervision, clinic and schedule management, and participate in a multi-disciplinary team of local public health professionals/managers. Incumbent will oversee various public health programs and services according to established protocols and provide support to staff in the use of electronic health records and data systems. This position will work under the direction of the Southwest Region Director of Nursing Services. All applicants for this position must be licensed in accordance with the Nursing Practice Act § 61-3-2 through 61-3-31 NMSA 1978 and 16.12.1 through 16.12.20 NMAC, as applicable.

How does it get done?

This position is responsible for:
-Supervising nurses and clerks by developing daily work schedules, evaluating work performance, approving leave, training or providing continuous education opportunities to staff, and orienting staff to new duty assignments.
-Ensuring lab tests (urinalysis, hemoglobin, pregnancy) are conducted after quality controls measures are performed, while wearing protective equipment, and following State Scientific Lab Division (SLD) procedures.
-Establishing pharmacy drug room procedures to ensure that prescribed drugs are stored properly and secured; drug dispensing logs are in balance; and all NM State Pharmacy Quality Control Standards are met.
-Enforcing the provision and documentation of family planning, Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD), Tuberculosis, Cancer Screening and Harm Reduction services in accordance with clinical treatment protocols, health record policy and procedures, and the BEHR (Billing & Electronic Health Record) system requirements.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate for this position must possess and maintain a current New Mexico Registered Nursing license or eligible for licensure in accordance with Nursing practice Act 61-3-2 through 61-3-31 NMSA 1978 and 16-12-1 through 61-12-20 NMAC, as applicable.
The ideal candidate has experience:
-Delivering highly specialized public health services to the people in New Mexico.
-Orienting and training new nursing staff and providing on-going training for established staff.
-Ensuring adherence to clinical policies, protocols and procedures.

Minimum Qualification

Must possess a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in New Mexico OR eligibility for such licensure in accordance with New Mexico requirements OR Eligibility for a temporary license issued for employment at a specific institution in New Mexico and five (5) years of experience as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of the classification.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a current NM license to practice as a Registered Nurse in New Mexico or eligibility for such licensure in accordance with New Mexico requirements. Position requires successful completion of HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability Accountability Act) course, completion of CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvements Act) within sixty (60) days of employment, completion of CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and blood-borne pathogen training within thirty (30) days of employment, as condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions

Services are provided in a clinic, auxiliary and community sites, and occasionally in the client's home with potential exposure to communicable diseases and computer usage for a variety of clinic and office functions. Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage with extended periods of office noise, bending, standing and lifting. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Services are provided in a clinic with diverse racial and ethnic populations, many who do not speak the English language.
