This position is part of the Northwest Region Public Health Division within the NMDOH. This division is responsible for developing and implementing public health programs, conducting research, providing health education, and responding to public health emergencies. Focus includes infectious disease control, maternal and child health, and disease prevention. Our mission is to improve the overall health and well-being of the community we serve.

The Public Health Nurse (PHN) Position will advance the health of individuals, families, and communities through partnerships, collaboration, and direct care. This position supports and delivers various public health programs, which may include, but is not limited to: Health Services such as Epidemiology and Response; Tuberculosis; STI screening, treatment and referrals; Immunizations; Family Planning; MOUD/MAT; Emergency Preparedness; and Disease Management. The nurse has protocols and standing orders and must decide when and how to implement them for the good of the client and/or the public. Providing clinical support/services in the public health clinic utilizing protocols/provider orders. Participates in the community and school collaboratives. Complies with the Federal, state, division and regional guidelines. Maintains general clinic flow.

Providing clinical support/services in the public health clinic and outreach locations utilizing protocols/provider orders.
Participate in community and school collaboratives.

Must advise on health maintenance and disease prevention.
This position administers nursing care to clients in an autonomous environment by utilizing the laws, principles, best practices, standing orders, and techniques of professional nursing.
This position must make program-specific decisions per protocols, and prioritize client needs accordingly.
Who are the customers?
The general public with prioritization of those who are uninsured/underinsured. Helps the community by coordinating assessments, planning, and providing of needed health related services; Participating in case conferences with NMDOH providers; and provision of outside referrals as appropriate.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate for this position must possess and maintain a current New Mexico Registered Nursing license or eligible for licensure in accordance with Nursing practice Act 61-3-2 through 61-3-+31 NMSA 1978 and 16-1-1 through 61-12-20 NMAC, as applicable. The ideal candidate has experience:
Delivering highly specialized public health services to the people in New Mexico
Ensuring adherence to clinical policies, protocols and procedures.
Ensuring compliance with lab and pharmacy regulations
Ensuring compliance with publicly funded vaccine programs.
Providing Immunizations.
Preparing and administering medications ordered by nursing initiated protocol, standing orders and/or adjust treatment plan based on clinician's orders.
The nurse in this position must posses strong critical thinking skills, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work autonomously as well as part of team.
Ability to problem solve.
Minimum Qualification
Must possess a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in New Mexico OR eligibility for such licensure in accordance with New Mexico requirements OR Eligibility for a temporary license issued for employment at a specific institution in New Mexico and three (3) years of experience as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of the classification.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Services are provided In a clinic, auxiliary and community sites, and occasionally in the client's home with potential exposure to communicable diseases and computer usage for a variety of clinic and office functions. Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual Nideo Display Terminal (VDTI and extensive personal computer and phone usage with extended periods of office noise, bending, standing and lifting. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Services are provided in a clinic with diverse racial and ethnic populations, many who do not speak the English language. Regular travel exceeding 50 miles is required.
