Job Summary
The Departments Psychiatry and Learning Health Sciences have been awarded a R21/R33 NIH grant to study Risky Alcohol Use and its effects on surgical outcomes. As part of this grant, we are seeking a motivated and dynamic team member to join us as an Applications Programmer Analyst Lead.
In collaboration with the co-PIs, this individual will participate on the research team as a skilled contributor and lead researcher who specializes in natural language processing and advanced data analysis. The role requires designing models or other vehicles for data gathering and analysis, conducting data analysis, participating in writing research proposals, reports for the funding agency and articles for publication, and will have oversight for researchers and staff engaged in day-to-day operations. The successful candidate must be able to present results of the study at professional meetings and other forums and be able to collaborate with other researchers on long-range plans for the project, acting as an expert in natural language processing and data harmonization.
Success in this role requires an ambitious and self-motivated individual capable of identifying areas for improvement, designing solutions, and prioritizing work to ensure the project is meeting its goals and timeline. This will involve learning and applying new computational technologies, programming languages, and skills to ensure that we are optimizing models and research results using state-of-the-art analytic approaches. An inquisitive individual with a strong work ethic and desire for continuous improvement is a strong fit for this position.

Additional Information
This is a 2-year term-limited appointment. At the end of the stated term, your appointment will terminate, and will not be eligible for Reduction-in-Force (RIF) benefits. This term-limited appointment does not create a contract or guarantee of employment for any period of time as you will remain subject to disciplinary or other performance measures, up to and including termination, at the will of the University in accordance with existing University policy and standards for employee performance and conduct.
Background Screening
Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.

Responsibilities*
The person hired for this position will be expected to:
- Assist Co-PIs with building reporting, evaluation, and analysis framework, including e-forms, executive summaries, and presentation slides
- Create programming, systems analysis, and documentation standards; updates procedures, forms and policies as needed
- Conduct research and contribute to publications along with PIs commensurate with education and experience level
Required Qualifications*
- Master's degree in learning health science, computer science or related discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Five or more years of experience working in a business or large healthcare environment or the equivalent of education and experience
- Experience working with data from clinical systems such as electronic health records
- Proficiency in R, Python, Linux, and Unix environments
- Familiarity with ML concepts (machine learning, statistics, deep learning)
- Experience working with protected health information and following human subjects research regulatory requirements
- Willingness to learn and quickly adjust to new tools and systems
- Capable of converting ambiguous problem statements into concrete project requirements
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills including technical writing and ability to communicate effectively and professionally with colleagues and stakeholders.
- Ability to understand and explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks, projects, and activities, setting priorities and maintaining deadlines, with minimal supervision.
- Demonstrate respect, trust, and integrity in all operational and interpersonal transactions.

- PhD-level education in learning health science, computer science or related discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Experience working with large language models and/or federated networks
