Job Summary

The Overdose Prevention Engagement Network (OPEN) is a diverse team dedicated to improving lives and reducing harms of substance use. By engaging with individuals, communities, and organizations, OPEN shares education and resources to strengthen person-centered prevention, treatment, and recovery.

We are looking for a dedicated Research Area Specialist to join our team. The ideal candidate will manage several complex research projects, including our STEPS (Strategies for Enhancing Perioperative Care for Surgical Patients with Opioid Tolerance) NIH R01, and facilitate both ongoing and new partnerships with the Collaborative Quality Initiatives (CQIs). This role involves overseeing research plans, reviewing progress, evaluating results, overseeing data collection and analysis, developing and implementation of patient care pathways, completing required sponsored reports, developing protocols and criteria, managing the IRBs, leading project meetings, overseeing and assisting with manuscript writing and development, supervising other project staff, and presenting at meetings and conferences. This role will require excellent communication and organization skills, team collaboration, and the ability to quickly learn and adapt in a fast-paced research environment.

This hybrid position requires 2-3 days per a week in our office located at the North Campus Research Complex in Ann Arbor.

Responsibilities*

Research Project Management:
  • Oversee the strategic planning, development, and operational execution of the STEPS R01 project.
  • Apply broad knowledge of measurement and analysis to assess project performance and prepare reports on the progress of the project throughout the lifecycle of the project as required by the funder.
  • Provide overall project team management to include leadership, guidance, coordination of activities and assistance to project team members as required.
  • Supervise and mentor one full time Clinical Research Assistant and several part-time temporary Research Assistants.
  • Oversee the scheduling of study volunteers, obtaining informed consent, coordinating study visits, developing study procedures, and maintaining a record of study visits, ensuring protocol compliance and data quality, and completing study closeout activities.
  • Lead the recruitment of hospitals for participation in the study and training for care pathway implementation.
  • Facilitate the development of educational resources and patient care pathways as needed to meet project deliverables.
  • Lead project team meetings, to include advanced agenda sharing
  • Collaborate with OPEN leadership on reporting, budget planning, resource allocation, and sustainability.

Collaborative Quality Initiatives (CQI) Partnership Engagement:
  • Develop and nurture partnerships with the Collaborative Quality Initiatives
  • Assess and identify opportunities for process improvements and best practices within the CQIs as they relate to OPEN initiatives
  • Collaborate with partners to design, implement, and evaluate CQI + OPEN projects
  • Collect, analyze, and use data to guide decision-making and measure the impact of projects
  • Facilitate regular meetings, workshops, and feedback sessions with stakeholders
  • Prepare reports and presentations to communicate CQI activities and outcomes
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement and innovation within the organization


Required Qualifications*
  • Bachelor Degree in a related field and 5 - 6 years of professional experience.
  • Supervisory experience required.
  • Experience leading projects in accordance with set budgets
  • Exceptional leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a focus on strategic planning and risk management.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in project management software and tools.
  • Ability to work independently with strong initiative and also collaborate effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Applications: word, excel, outlook, and PowerPoint.

Desired Qualifications*
  • Bachelor Degree in Nursing or Masters Degree preferred.
  • Familiarity with Epic or other electronic health record(s).
  • Experience with federal and state funded research projects.
  • Experience with research at an academic medical center.
  • Experience with developing and implementing clinical care pathways for complex patients.
  • Experience or familiarity with the structure of the Collaborative Quality Initiatives.

Additional Information

Please note: This position is term-limited through 9/30/2026 with the possibility of renewal based on need and available funding. At the end of the stated term, your appointment will terminate, and will not be eligible for Reduction-in-Force (RIF) benefits. This term-limited appointment does not create a contract or guarantee of employment for any period of time as you will remain subject to disciplinary or other performance measures, up to and including termination, at the will of the University in accordance with existing University policy and standards for employee performance and conduct.
