The Laboratory for Optical Micromechanics directed by Dr. Seemantini Nadkarni is seeking highly motivated mechanical, electrical and biomedical engineers to fill open positions. Our Laboratory is located at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. The Wellman Center for Photomedicine is the world's largest academic research facility dedicated to the development of light-mediated, diagnostic and therapeutic technologies.

At the Laboratory for Optical Micromechanics our mission is to innovate and develop potentially life-saving diagnostic technologies and devices to address major clinical and biomedical problems in hematology, cardiology and cancer research. Successful candidates will demonstrate a keen interest and track record in innovating medical devices for bed-to-bedside clinical translation. Research engineers in the laboratory will work closely with the principal investigator, postdoctoral scientists and graduate students to design, develop, fabricate, test, and validate novel devices and instruments. Engineers will participate in teams creating novel technologies and devices for both clinical and biological applications including the design and construction of in vitro diagnostic devices, novel microscopes and endoscopes. Tasks may include electrical, mechanical, or optical design, and could include software interfaces. A major thrust of the projects will involve the development of novel microfluidic and millifluidic devices for blood and biofluid diagnostics. The engineers may lead or participate in the development of electronic board design, hardware prototyping and software design, computer aided design and fabrication. She/He will ensure that device testing is performed and system documentation is completed. Expertise in Solidworks is a pre-requisite for this position.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Note: The term medical equipment may be either or all of electronic, mechanical and computer-based technologies for use in clinical or research applications.

  1. Design, fabrication, testing, and validation of medical and devices and research instruments including optical and mechanical systems.
  2. Provide mechanical design of subcomponents using Solidworks software, conduct prototype fabrication and oversee the manufacturing of these subcomponents from internal and external machine shops.
  3. Assist in capital equipment purchases and preparation of budgets.
  4. Develop protocols and procedures for the use, maintenance, and testing of equipment and assist in conducting animal and clinical studies.
  5. Perform other related duties as required.


SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

1. Skill in management of engineering projects and/or personnel

2. Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team of scientist, engineers and medical doctor

3. Ability to diagnose and solve technical and/or system problems of moderate complexity

4. Knowledge of optical, electronic, mechanical and/or computer engineering design and applications' principle

5. Proficiency in Solidworks software and rapid prototyping using 3D printing, laser cutting

6. Expertise in electronic circuits, and programming in Matlab/ C++/ Python is a plus

7. Experience in prototyping and device fabrication

8. High level of skills in technical writing and project management

9. Proficiency in Solidworks is a key pre-requisite, prior experience in microfluidics and/or millifluidic technologies is a plus.

Qualifications

EDUCATION:

  • BS in Engineering required, MS is preferred


EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in device engineering in a hospital, industry, or academic setting required.
  • Experience in medical engineering desired


WORKING CONDITIONS:

May work in research laboratory or clinical site with potential exposure to biological agents, e.g., blood-borne pathogens, hazardous electrical, e.g., high voltage, or mechanical energy. Occasional lifting of heavy objects, typically not exceeding 75 pounds/person may be requested. MGH policies governing appropriate laboratory attire will be followed including use of personal protective equipment.
