Required Qualifications (as evidenced by attached resume):
Bachelor's Degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Experience working with data and database management. Experience working on boats. Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver's License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. Preferred Qualifications:Advanced Degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in biology, fisheries, ecology, marine sciences, oceanography, or related field. AAUS Scientific Diver Certification. Two (2) years of full time equivalent experience organizing and executing marine and/or fisheries field-based research activities, of which field work during degree would be acceptable. Experience working with acoustic telemetry data. Experience acoustically tagging shark and finfish species. Experience working on research vessels. Experience with a range of sampling gear including otter trawls, beam trawls, long-lines, and shark gear. Experience presenting and communicating scientific results. Advanced open water certification. Experience diving.

Brief Description of Duties:
Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, Dr. Bradley Peterson in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS), the Research Support Specialist, will provide support to the Sunrise Wind Export Cable (SRWEC) project. This position will require onshore and offshore duties. The Research Support Specialist will be primarily responsible for deploying and maintaining a large nearshore ocean telemetry network and will track the behavior of tagged elasmobranch and finfish species such as Dusky Sharks, Sandbar Sharks, Sand Tiger Sharks, Smooth Dogfish, Winter Skate and other species. The successful incumbent must possess outstanding written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, and experience successfully working independently as well as part of a team with a collaborative approach to problem solving. Strategic and analytical thinking skills with an ability to solve problems and make effective decisions are necessary to be successful in this role.

Responsibilities will include the following:
  • Offshore Duties
    • Support the Sunrise Wind Export Cable (SRWEC) project that maintains a large nearshore ocean telemetry network.
    • Acoustically tag Dusky Sharks, Sandbar Sharks, Sand Tiger Sharks, Smooth Dogfish, Winter Skate and other species.
  • Represent the scientific party (3-5 individuals) on cruises to support biological sampling and mooring deployment. Represent the science party's concerns to the research vessel captain. Serving as chief scientist requires strong communication skills and the ability to make sound decisions in an uncertain environment without the ability to communicate directly with a supervisor.
  • Onshore Duties
    • Under supervision of the Principal Investigator, maintain a research database.
    • Assist with the preparation of reports to sponsors, and development of manuscripts for scientific journal publication.
    • Purchase supplies, build gear systems, and participate in pre-cruise organizing.
    • Assist graduate and undergraduate students working in the laboratory in support of processing biological samples and analytical analyses.
  • Other duties as assigned.
