Position Summary

The position is responsible for performing glycosyl composition and linkage analysis using GC-MS in addition to purification and structural characterization of plant and bacterial carbohydrates. These services are CCRC's most requested service that the outside investigators are asking the Service Lab to perform. This position is responsible for coordinating these services in relation to other service and resources of the Service Laboratory. The position involves method development in research of plant and bacterial projects and in particular co-authorship in scientific journals. Work also involves instruction in the NIH and DOE hands-on training courses that the CCRC offers four weeks a year for scientists from various public and private institutions around the world.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

Knowledge of carbohydrate derviatization techniques and GC-MS and instrumentation and purification protocols. In particular, being able to perform research on challenging projects.

Perform glycosyl composition and linkage analysis on bacterial polysaccharides using GC-MS.

Collaborative Research Projects - Develop and implement methods for the purification, derivatization and characterization of bacterial samples using gas chromatography for research projects. Have co-authorship on scientific manuscripts and responsibility in conducting the research and contributing to writing manuscripts.

Interpretation of gas chromatography data and report writing.

Perform periodic maintenance of all ASL instruments (HPLC, HPAEC, GC-MS e.g.) changing the GC columns and septum.

Assist as a laboratory instructor in the CCRC Annual NIH and DOE Training Courses for scientists from different universities, including UGA, research and regulatory institutions, and private industries around the world.
