The Safety Officer I is a steady, normal paced work environment position assisting the Galveston Maintenance and Area Office in morning safety meetings, end of the day huddles, and ensuring compliance of policy, guidelines, and procedures. This position will play a very crucial role at our facility by working closely with crews and managers in the office and our Texas Roads to ensure a safe work environment.

Position Description

Assists in overseeing a district, division or marine safety program in accordance with the Occupational Safety Division Manual or Rules and Regulations Governing Ferry Operations. Works to create an active interest in accident prevention and the safety program. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Essential Duties:

  • Assists in coordinating/processing permits and licenses with applicable resource and regulatory agencies; assists in preparing and maintaining currency of Tier Two and Workplace Chemical Lists.
  • Assists in maintaining a comprehensive written hazard communication program for the district.
  • Assists in preparing updates for Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasures (SPCC) plan
  • Coordinates safety meetings; usually involves planning, conducting, coordinating schedules and providing literature and audio-visual material.
  • Inspects equipment and work areas.
  • Investigates employee accidents, prepares reports and maintains records; identifies injury types and accident causes, recommends preventative actions and conducts follow-up investigations.
  • Plans, schedules and assists with administering training on safety issues including defensive driving, CPR, first-aid, fleet safety and hazardous materials; maintains applicable training records.
  • Plans, schedules and monitors programs or activities that promote employee safety and accident prevention.
  • Provides safety information for bulletin boards and employees.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned


Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Safety , Industrial Technology, Business Admin or related discipline. R elevant work experience may be substituted for degree on a year per year basis . Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Competencies:

  • Some knowledge of:
    • Applicable governmental laws, rules and regulations specific to area of responsibility for safeguarding information and

      information technology related systems
    • Construction, maintenance and operation of transportation facilities
    • Hazardous materials management methods and procedures
    • Safety methods and procedures associated with warehousing hazardous materials
  • Proficient skill in:
    • Speaking to present images and ideas in a clear, concise, organized, and interesting manner to optimize audience understanding and keep the group focused
    • Public relations for maintaining effective working relationships with individuals and groups, both internal and external
    • Preparing and maintaining confidential and sensitive records, files and reports
    • Using computers and applicable programs, applications, and systems
    • Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment and mechanical devices of the trade
  • Collaborates and cooperates with others and builds effective working relationships with internal and external members to accomplish organizational goals


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools
  • Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time
  • Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
  • Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
