Job Summary
The School of Nursing (SON) Director of Student Services participates in and ensures positive outcomes for all operations (recruitment/retention, admissions, orientations, academic advising, academic actions, public relations); and Student Services staff management.

Responsibilities*
Staff Supervision
- Management of SON Student Services staff consisting of all Academic Advisors and Administrative Assistants including the authority to hire, terminate, or promote assigned employees or make recommendations that are given weight.
- Establish ongoing professional development opportunities to support the retention and professional growth of SON Student Services staff
- Working with leadership of the UM-Flint Student Success Center, align and implement a comprehensive SON Student Services Staff Training Program to contribute to the achievement of the university's goals for excellence in student advising.
- Develop and oversee an annual performance evaluation program for SON Student Services staff
Student Admissions, Advising, Retention and Career Planning
- Promote the diversity of student cohorts, including overseeing best practices for Holistic Admission in the school and support for intentional recruitment and retention.
- Develop and implement student retention strategies based on best practices for academic advising in higher education, with the SON Student Success Coordinator, and with attention to serving students from varied backgrounds
- Manage the admissions and orientation of new students, including the secondary admit process.
- Facilitate graduation/degree completion processes for students
- The ability to advocate for SON Student Services while communicating overarching campus priorities and opportunities.
- Monitor matriculation and attrition patterns along with following up with students who are dismissed or on probation
Planning and Implementation
- Develop processes for tracking data needed for operational efficiency; manage student and program data; and prepare regulatory reports.
- Contribute to good financial stewardship to include input on budget planning and controlling costs.
- Maintain external and internal communications:
- Represent the SON on selected campus committees/workgroups/Student Success Center
- Be member of the Office of Students Services team and in ex-officio capacity on governing committees (e.g., Admissions, Curriculum, Academic Standards, Awards/Scholarships)
- Responsible for the accuracy of student information on the SON website; preparation of program information materials, catalogs, and brochures working collaboratively with the SON Communication Specialists
- Be a liaison with academic and student personnel departments (Admissions, Registrar, Financial Aid, Disability Services, Graduate Programs) to determine and promote awareness of student needs
Required Qualifications*
- Master's degree in higher education (academic advising, education leadership, counseling, academic services) or related area.
- 3 or more years of recent management or supervisory experience.
- 8 or more years of experience in higher education student services. This should include some or all of the following: academic advising, student success support or admissions.
- Demonstrated experience with organizational assessment, data analysis, and process improvement.
- Demonstrated appreciation for and a thoughtful understanding of diversity, inclusion, and belonging
