CDFW's South Coast Region is looking for a motivated scientist with a passion for the "bigger picture" to work as a Senior Environmental Scientist (Specialist) in the Natural Community Conservation Planning (NCCP) Unit located in San Diego. This position is crucial for ensuring regional conservation for sensitive species and habitats and is a great opportunity to be involved in regional conservation planning efforts that will impact the landscape for decades to come. Patience and passion for the mission are a must. With support from the NCCP Unit Supervisor, the incumbent will be responsible for independently performing assigned work in the development and implementation of NCCPs and other related landscape planning efforts, such as Regional Conservation Investment Strategies plans or Habitat Conservation Plans; complex and in-depth environmental reviews and analysis of California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) documents, as trustee and/or lead agency capacities, California Endangered Species Act (CESA) permits, Lake and Streambed Alteration (LSA) Agreements, and other environmental documents; review of mitigation banking and land acquisition documents as it relates to NCCPs; and coordination with other regional and statewide staff and external agencies and stakeholders.

Working Conditions
Office is located in San Diego and is subject to current telework policies. Attend in person meetings and workgroups with stakeholders, and local, state, and federal agency in person in across the Region, but primarily in Orange and San Diego counties. Travel and field site visits will be required. Must have the ability to walk on uneven, hilly terrain. Must use safety or protective footwear for field site visits. A CDFW-branded uniform may be required for interagency/multi-stakeholder in-person meetings and site visits.

Special Requirements
Ability to use a computer and Microsoft Office software up to eight hours per day. Must be able to drive to and from meetings and site visits within 3-5 hours from the San Diego office. Walking in and through rural terrain; hiking over rough terrain; operating a 4WD vehicle off highway, over rough terrain. The incumbent may be required to conduct some physical labor (i.e. habitat management in support of NCCP implementation duties) or other activities that require lifting up to 25 pounds.
