Responsibilities

AHEC Tobacco Program at the FSU College of Medicine

The Area Health Education Center (AHEC) at the FSU College of Medicine was established as part of the authorizing legislation which created our 21st century medical school. Located in the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Social Medicine, the AHEC program supports the College's mission and has a focus on developing clinical training opportunities for students in rural and medically underserved areas and supporting the College's wide-ranging youth mentoring programs. The FSU AHEC Program is part of an extensive, statewide network of university and community based AHECs.

Responsibilities include:

Travels throughout the state to meet with executive leadership to recruit or prepare organizations for participation with the Tobacco Free Florida AHEC cessation program and/or the FSU "Community of Practice". Determines appropriate levels of service for the organizations. Creates training curricula on a variety of topics including tobacco policy, assessment and treatment planning, clinical best practices, Motivational Interviewing, relapse prevention, disparities populations, other tobacco products, and whole health approaches. Delivers staff training at the organizations, either individually or in collaboration with the local AHEC.

Manages the "Tobacco Free Florida: The Journey Starts Here" fidelity study based on the curriculum for AHEC behavioral health group cessation services. Travels throughout the state to monitor AHEC facilitators and provides a written report for the facilitator and the AHEC at which they are employed. Develops an annual report for Tobacco Free Florida including recommendations for quality improvements for facilitators and the program. Informs FSU AHEC Director of recommendations for statewide facilitator training needs. Based on the fidelity study, identifies and promotes best practices within the FL AHEC Network.

Serves as a core faculty member and delivers assigned modules for the nationally accredited Tobacco Treatment Specialist course.

Manages the annual Summer Clinical Practicum tobacco initiative for first year students, other FSU COM courses that include tobacco content and student interest groups that integrate tobacco education and/or service learning opportunities.

Responsible for the management of at least one health professional organization. Submits annual abstracts to peer reviewed conference planning committees and delivers workshops tailored for that profession. Develops relationships with the leadership of the organizations. Promotes scholarships for the FSU COM AHEC Tobacco Treatment Specialist training. Writes 2-3 articles per year for the organization's newsletter.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and four years of experience related to health and human services. (Note: higher education can substitute for experience at an equivalent rate.)

Valid state of Florida or Georgia Driver's License or the ability to obtain prior to hire.

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of project planning, development, and evaluation.
  • Knowledge of the concept, principles and practices of management.
  • Knowledge of training and teaching methodology.
