Description

Contributes to the site's success by developing and implementing regulatory-aligned safety programs, policies, and tools that reduce risk of employees incurring workplace injuries. This is accomplished by partnering with key stakeholders at the site including leadership, Operations, and Maintenance to gain alignment in understanding of injury risks and necessary mitigations. This position will influence employee behaviors in assessing and controlling workplace hazards. This position will also collaborate with the greater Valero Health and Safety team to share and implement recognized best practices.

  • Partners with site Operations and Maintenance to achieve site Health and Safety goals: Develops and maintains good communication, presentation and interpersonal skills that facilitate Health and Safety improvement. Is responsive to routine requests for information and safety consultation. Authors site safety procedures / policies and drives requirements into practice.
  • Develops and recommends business driven and cost-effective strategies: Demonstrates an untiring effort to find new and better ways to comply with new and existing regulations and requirements, with the goal of reducing risk of injuries and obtaining all other business goals.
  • Maintains ownership in Safety budget, continually to identify controls that are cost-effective in achieving best practices.
  • Develops and delivers safety training to the site. Adjusts content and teaching style to match the learning style of the audience.
  • Maintains records in a systematic manner to demonstrate compliance with regulations and VPP Star requirements. Interacts with agency inspectors in a constructive manner.
  • Manages relationships with safety business partners that service the site (vendors, gas detection, in-plant service centers, project/TA safety services, inspection technicians) and sets expectations for performance.
  • Leads planning and execution of safety events (e.g. annual safety training, program implementation, safety fairs, fire training, etc.)
  • Participates with company safety networks to share and implement best practices. Actively collaborates on company-wide initiatives, volunteering to the take the lead on select initiatives. Shares learning experiences.
  • Evaluates process changes for safety impact or compliance.
  • Evaluates new chemicals for safety impact or compliance.
  • Leads analysis and communication of safety statistics and KPIs to site. Identifies trends and lead initiatives to return at-risk areas to acceptable risk.
  • Adjusts the new employee (company or contract) safety onboarding process based on realized areas of opportunity.
  • Develops and maintains a working knowledge of the site and processes.
  • Acts as a site SME in many safety areas: fall protection, excavations, confined spaces entries, ventilation, hazardous energy isolation and control, personal protective equipment.
  • Participates in Trade Association (e.g. AFPM, VPPPA, ASSE) meetings for their assigned field.
  • Works with supervisor on professional and personal development and career planning, continually striving for personal development by accepting new assignments. Mentors less-experienced health and safety professionals.
  • Works through company safety networks to consolidate contracts and add value to the organization.
  • Holds signature authority to issue releases against standing purchasing orders at the discretion of the Site HSE Manager.
  • Other duties may be assigned.


This position is salaried exempt status, which means you are not eligible for overtime pay.

The [salary range] [rate] for this position is $114,160 to $156,970 and represents Valero's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of expected compensation at the time of this posting. Actual compensation will be determined based on a number of job-related factors, including but not limited to, the individual's qualifications and experience.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree or higher degree in Health and Safety from an ABET accredited school required.
  • 5 years of safety experience required.
  • Able and willing to work on-site, in-person at the Valero Wilmington Refinery, required.
