Are you interesting in contributing to the protection of California's natural resources? Come join CDFW and help us expand our statewide ecological data network! Under close supervision of project managers Wildlife Branch Lands Program and Science Institute, the incumbent performs a variety of duties leading the installation, management, and data analysis of climate and biodiversity sensors for the CDFW Climate-Biodiversity Sentinel Site network throughout California. The program aims to assess the potential impacts of climate change on biodiversity in support of the Department's mission. Duties include planning and leading routine field visits focused on the installation and maintenance of climate sensors, camera traps, acoustic recorders, and Motus towers that are used to track migratory wildlife. The incumbent will coordinate closely with regional staff and serve as a lead person for Environmental Scientist Interns assisting with the work. The incumbent will process field data using newly developed artificial intelligence tools and online platforms; QA/QC, organize, and analyze data; and prepare information for reports, publications, and presentations.
This position is a 12-month Limited Term (LT) and may be extended up to 24 months or become permanent.
If you currently have permanent status in your position and have passed probation, you have mandatory reinstatement rights into your former position at the end of this LT appointment. If you have not had prior permanent or probationary civil service status, you will be separated from state service.

Working Conditions
Field duties include substational long-distance overnight travel during the field season and some short day-long trips, and may require rigorous physical work under variable conditions in the field. Office duties involve the ability to use a computer keyboard several hours a day and attending virtual or in person meetings. This may necessitate sitting most of the time and walking or standing for brief periods. A minimum of two days per week must be either in-office or in the field.

Ability to organize/synthesize large amounts of varied information. Ability to carry out field work in rugged and hot environments.
Special Personal Characteristics: A high degree of personal initiative, dependability, professionalism, and integrity is expected. Ability to lift up to 40 pounds repeatedly throughout the day and hike up to 2 miles. Working knowledge of ecology and wildlife and vegetation monitoring techniques, strong analytical skills, and the desire to help build a new statewide program. Interpersonal Skills: Able to work independently and in a team setting; communicate politely and tactfully with members of the public. Have effective listening and negotiation skills and be able to facilitate collaboration in a technical setting and work effectively in a diverse work environment.
