Description
The Department of English in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at West Virginia University invites applications for a Service Assistant Professor of English Secondary Education starting August 16, 2024. This is a 9-month, full-time, non-tenure track position with full benefits with a stipend for summer work. Service Assistant Professor appointments have renewable terms of up to three years, with no limit on the number of terms. Service Assistant Professors are eligible for promotion, e.g., Service Assistant Professor to Service Associate Professor and Service Professor; however, promotion to senior ranks is not a requirement for institutional commitment and career stability.
The successful candidate will advise undergraduate students in the English Secondary Education BA program and coordinate that program; they will teach two courses per semester (40%) and the remainder of their appointment (60%) will be dedicated to service expectations. The successful candidate will be expected to advise students, supervise all student teachers, collaborate with colleagues, and teach classes that complement the School of Education's current offerings.
WVU is an approved Education Preparation Provider (EPP) according to West Virginia Board of Education (WVBE) Policy 5100, thus it must adhere to all facets of this policy to maintain its standing. Across WVU, there are Teacher Preparation Programs (TPPs) located in four different colleges. Each TPP is considered an individual certification pathway or degree program. This Service Assistant Professor position supports the English Secondary Education, BA. Each TPP has responsibilities specific to ensuring WVU adheres to WVBE Policy 5100. These responsibilities include:
Cooperating teacher and university supervisor of clinical experience compensation is the responsibility of the TPP and therefore the Service Assistant Professor. The Service Assistant Professor position is responsible for establishing procedures and collecting information to process payments for cooperating teachers and university supervisors.
Additionally, serving as the English Secondary education program coordinator requires collecting and maintaining data for individual students to ensure they meet all requirements for initial licensure (tracking field-placement hours, EdTPA and PRAXIS II scores, Danielson final evaluations) and for student cohorts for accreditation purposes. The program coordinator attends all PECC/EPACC meetings, advises students, and helps recruit students to the program.

The Department of English is home to four undergraduate majors including a BA in English, the BA in English Secondary Education, a BA in Professional Writing and Editing, and a BS in Scientific and Technical Writing. We have 26 full-time faculty (tenure, teaching, and service tracks) who consistently win the university's top awards in teaching, research, and mentoring. We have a vibrant community of ~55 graduate students represented across our four graduate programs including an MA and PhD in English, an MFA in Creative Writing, as well as an MA in Professional Writing and Editing. Our graduates have an exemplary placement record finding positions in academic and non-academic environments.

Qualifications
The successful candidate will coordinate the English Secondary Education BA program and will contribute to the training of future English teachers. The successful candidate must 1) hold a Ph.D. or Ed.D. degree in English Education or closely related field such as curriculum and instruction or English at the time of appointment; 2) demonstrate a knowledge of contemporary issues in curriculum and teaching; 3) demonstrate knowledge of curriculum development; 4) show ability to successfully teach English methods or related courses in higher education; 5) show ability to successfully mentor and advise undergraduate students; 6) show a commitment to developing partnerships with K-12 schools. Additionally, candidates that meet any of the following criteria are strongly encouraged to apply: 1) three years of demonstrated experience teaching in K-12 classrooms; 2) teacher certification; 3) experience collecting data and writing reports for CAEP accreditation.
